Memphis Grizzlies say they will be 'cautious' with Ja Morant after ankle injury
Memphis Grizzlies point guard Ja Morant did not practice on Wednesday afternoon after injuring his ankle in the tean's preseason opener on Monday night against the Dallas Mavericks.
An MRI was conducted on Tuesday and determined that Morant is dealing with a mild ankle sprain, according to Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins. Memphis is still two weeks away from its season opener against the Utah Jazz, and all signs point to Morant being fully ready to go by that point.
"We expect him to be ready for opening night against Utah, but we're going to be cautious over the next couple of weeks with that ankle sprain," Jenkins said.
Morant first injured the ankle in the second quarter after Mavs wing Naji Marshall attempted a pass that hit the Grizzlies all star in the ankle. Morant then turned his ankle and limped off the floor.
Five minutes later, Morant returned to the game, but he would only play three more minutes before hobbling off again after a two-handed dunk.
Memphis often takes a cautious approach with injuries, so Jenkins' statement shouldn't be a surprise. The Grizzlies are incorporating a new offense and system that will require reps. Morant has not been ruled out for the entire preseason, but he's unlikely to play on Thursday when Memphis hosts the Indiana Pacers.
