FSU football's 'intensity and competitiveness' stand out in Jacksonville practice

JACKSONVILLE - Florida State football made an immediate adjustment as it opened its two-day mini-camp here Wednesday.

Due to wet field conditions at the University of North Florida, coach Mike Norvell and his Seminoles held practice at the Jacksonville Jaguars' Flex Field.

It is still uncertain whether or not the practice field at North Florida will be ready for Thursday. Norvell and FSU are monitoring the field conditions.

"I'm grateful to the Jaguars and Daily's Place for allowing us to come over here and get to work this morning, "Norvell said following the Seminoles' 12th practice of the preseason.

"Because of the wet fields and making sure the footing was as good as it could be, hopefully, we'll be over there at North Florida tomorrow. "

Mike Norvell loved the intensity, awareness FSU football brought during practice

The Seminoles brought their A-game to the Jaguars' indoor facility. Norvell liked what he saw from both offense and defense.

"I was pleased with today's practice," Norvell said.

"I thought the intensity and competitiveness ... you saw explosiveness defensively and praised them for playing in situational moments.

Norvell also praised their secondary for continuing to make plays on third down. It was something he enjoyed seeing on defense as it returns seven starters from last year.

"I thought we did a good job flying around to the ball against 3rd and long situations," Norvell said.

"We saw some good things from both sides, trying to force guys to transition some secrecy of plays and understand situational awareness."

Mike Norvell happy to see former FSU DB Jarrian Jones

Norvell saw a couple of familiar faces as FSU was finishing up 11-on-11.

Jaguars rookie cornerback Jarrian Jones and NFL veteran Ronald Darby stopped after their practice to see their former team. Norvell was excited to see them passing through to say hello.

"Those are two great Seminoles," Norvell said. "J-Dub is one of my all-time favorites. For him to come by and see him smile on his face watching his team practice."

Norvell talked more about Jones and his college journey and said he is proud to see him in a Jags uniform.

"He embraced the process of growth," Norvell said.

"We pushed him, and he had some challenges to overcome throughout his collegiate journey. He was still able to get better with his versatility."

Jones played four seasons at FSU after transferring from Mississippi State in 2020. The Jaguars selected the DB in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft.

Darby signed a two-year contract with the Jaguars in March. He will be entering his 10th season in the NFL.
