Five big questions about Texas football, this week's college games | Golden

The college football season is upon us.

Texas football will play Colorado State and a couple of ranked teams will go down in premier Week 1 matchups. Who's at risk of an upset?

Here are five things I'm thinking about this week:

1. Which game will tell us the most about Texas?

Because it won't be Colorado State. The Longhorns will open the season with a 45-10 win and improve to 22-3 in openers since 2000, but the game that will serve as the barometer for what’s to come is Oct. 19 at home against the top-ranked Georgia Bulldogs. The Horns will have the benefit of playing UGA at the house, but it will come a week after the Oklahoma game.

The emotions from whatever happens in Dallas will have to be quickly set aside in preparation for one of the most successful programs in the nation. It will be Texas’ first showdown against a traditional SEC power since the program-changing win at Alabama last year. It'll be a nice midseason gut check.

2. Who'll win this year's Power Four conferences?

I'm picking Georgia in the SEC, Ohio State in the Big Ten, Utah in the Big 12 and Clemson in the ACC.

Is it too late to say I will miss late-night Pac-12 games? Sorry, I’m sentimental that way.

3. Who'll win it all — and how will Texas do?

Forgive me for getting chalky on all of you, but I’m picking Ohio State to take out Georgia in the title game. Ironic that it’s two of the most powerful football factories representing the two most influential leagues in the NCAA. Georgia’s bid to win the SEC’s seventh national championship in 10 seasons will come up just short.

4. What game would I pay to see this week?

Clemson at Georgia.

Not only would I love to get an up-close, advance look at Texas’ scariest opponent, but wouldn’t it be something to watch Clemson rise from the ashes since coach Dabo Swinney and Co. aren’t really being considered a title contender these days? This time last year, the Tigers were summarily humiliated 28-7 by Duke to open the season, and while they went on to finish 9-4, it wasn’t up to the program standard.

Georgia has title aspirations, and nothing would signify Clemson’s return to the elite better than a win over the favorite to win it all.

5. Which Top 25 team will be upset?

Notre Dame.

The seventh-ranked Fighting Irish will run headfirst into an Aggie buzz saw in College Station. No. 20 Texas A&M will deliver new head coach Mike Elko the perfect welcome-home present with a 24-21 win.

Saturday's opener

Colorado at No. 4 Texas, 2:30 p.m., Royal-Memorial Stadium, ESPN, 1300, 98.1, 105.3 (Spanish)
