Final 49ers 53-man roster projection: Depth may be a problem in 2024
Preseason is over! The regular season is up next for the San Francisco 49ers.
Before they suit up for their Monday Night Football showdown with the New York Jets on Sept. 9, they have to get their roster from 90 players down to 53. The deadline to do so is Tuesday at 1:00pm Pacific Time. Chances are we see some cuts start to leak out before then.
That gives us one last chance to do a 53-man roster projection.
Our first projection can be found here. Our second projection can be found here. Our third projection can be found here. Our fourth projection can be found ... wait for it ... here.
Here's what the updated prediction looks like after the final preseason game:
Quarterback (3)
Brock PurdyBrandon AllenJoshua Dobbs
Changes: It looks like the 49ers will keep three, so no changes. Both Allen and Dobbs performed well enough to land roster spots. The only way they don't is if the 49ers can get a decent pick for one in a trade.
Running back (4)
Christian McCaffreyElijah MitchellJordan MasonIsaac Guerendo
Changes: Guerendo is the change here. He's on the team instead of undrafted rookie Cody Schrader. There's a chance both make it though if the team opts to move Mitchell. If Mason has surpassed Mitchell on the depth chart, there may not be a role for the veteran sixth-round pick. Schrader and Guerendo should both contribute on special teams which may win them a job over a productive vet.
Fullback (1)
Kyle Juszczyk
Changes: None.
Wide receiver (6)
Brandon AiyukDeebo SamuelJauan JenningsChris ConleyRicky PearsallJacob Cowing
Changes: No changes from our last projection. Cowing only solidified his place on the roster with an excellent preseason finale. Pearsall's shoulder injury is a big enough concern that keeping a reliable veteran like Conley over a bigger wild card like Ronnie Bell makes sense.
Tight end (4)
George KittleBrayden WillisJake Tonges
Changes: We're sticking with three tight ends. Eric Saubert could be the third TE with Kittle and Willis. That would leave Tonges off the team, but San Francisco may be able to get him to the practice squad.
Offensive line (8)
Trent WilliamsColton McKivitzJake BrendelDominick PuniAaron BanksSpencer BurfordJaylon MooreNick ZakeljChris Hubbard
Changes: Jon Feliciano's injury will start him on IR. We'll assume Williams has his contract issue ironed out by Tuesday's cutdown deadline. Ben Bartch could also snag a roster spot if Williams isn't on the initial 53-man roster.
Defensive line (8)
Nick BosaLeonard FloydJavon HargraveMaliek CollinsYetur Gross-MatosRobert Beal Jr.Jordan ElliottKevin Givens
Changes: There aren't any changes here. Gross-Matos and Floyd both suffered knee sprains in the preseason finale which may generate some real issues for the 49ers on the defensive front.
Linebacker (6)
Fred WarnerDe'Vondre CampbellDemetrius Flannigan-FowlesDee WintersJalen GrahamTatum Bethune
Changes: The LB group stays six players deep and Curtis Robinson remains the odd man out. San Francisco should be able to sneak him through to their practice squad.
Cornerback (6)
Charvarius WardDeommodore LenoirRenardo GreenSamuel WomackIsaac YiadomRock Ya-Sin
Changes: Ya-Sin's playing time in the preseason finale makes us think he is going to land a roster spot. Womack appeared to outplay Luter in that same game, so he'll get in this time with Luter on the outside looking in.
Safety (4)
Talanoa HufangaJi'Ayir BrownGeorge OdumMalik Mustapha
Changes: It's still unclear whether Hufanga will make the initial 53-man roster. He's yet to be activated from the PUP list. If he doesn't get activated by Tuesday, the 49ers could go with three safeties and keep an extra offensive lineman out of the gate.
Specialists (3)
K Jake MoodyP Mitch WishnowskyLS Taybor Pepper
Changes: None. Good group.
