49ers 53-man roster projection 4.0: A shakeup on the DL and in the WR corps
Another San Francisco 49ers preseason game is in the books. They knocked off the New Orleans Saints 16-10 at Levi's Stadium on Sunday.
That means it's time for a new 53-man roster projection, and Sunday's game actually offered reason to make a handful of tweaks to the roster.
One small issue that's starting to arise for the 49ers is that they don't have a ton of depth at key spots. This may cause them to tweak the roster numbers in ways we haven't seen from them in past years. Alas, we'll stick to a more typical roster layout for now heading into the final week of the preseason:
Our first projection can be found here. Our second projection can be found here. Our third projection can be found ... you guessed it ... here.
Here's what the updated prediction looks like after the second preseason game:
Quarterback (3)
Brock PurdyBrandon AllenJoshua Dobbs
Changes: No changes this time. This trio should make up a strong quarterback room, and injuries under center elsewhere in the league may make it impossible to sneak one to the practice squad.
Running back (4)
Christian McCaffreyElijah MitchellJordan MasonCody Schrader
Changes: No changes to the RB room either. Schrader was better in his second preseason outing than his first. So was Matt Breida who is a player just to keep an eye on. The 49ers may lean toward a veteran who knows their offense if the backfield is banged up going into the regular season. For now, this is the quartet.
Fullback (1)
Kyle Juszczyk
Changes: There are so few scenarios where this would change it's almost funny.
Wide receiver (6)
Brandon Aiyuk (yep)Deebo SamuelJauan JenningsChris ConleyRicky PearsallJacob Cowing
Changes: Conley is back in over Ronnie Bell. With Pearsall banged up and Aiyuk's situation in flux, it makes sense that San Francisco would want to hang onto a veteran WR they're comfortable playing on offense. Conley can also contribute on special teams. Bell just isn't consistent enough to comfortably keep around.
Tight end (3)
George KittleBrayden WillisJake Tonges
Changes: Tonges over Eric Saubert is the change. Chances are Saubert winds up making the team, but the bottom line is there aren't comfortably three NFL tight ends on the roster. Tonges has flashed more as a receiver in preseason games, and he's lined up some at fullback in practice.
Offensive line (9)
Trent WilliamsColton McKivitzJake BrendelDominick PuniAaron BanksJon FelicianoSpencer BurfordChris HubbardNick Zakelj
Changes: Zakelj is back after missing the last projection. That he started at left guard in Week 2 of the preseason is interesting. It's also a sign of his growth as an interior offensive lineman. If he can fill in at three interior OL spots he should be able to sneak onto the back of the roster.
Defensive line (8)
Nick BosaLeonard FloydJavon HargraveMaliek CollinsYetur Gross-MatosRobert Beal Jr.Jordan ElliottKevin Givens
Changes: This is tough. We've now had remove Kalia Davis, who's out with a knee injury until at least midseason. We're going thin on the defensive line with only eight players. There's just not a defensive lineman being left off here that we feel absolutely has to be on the roster. Ultimately San Francisco will likely land on nine or 10 DL to keep around. For now we're going short there to open up a roster spot elsewhere.
Linebacker (6)
Fred WarnerDe'Vondre CampbellDemetrius Flannigan-FowlesDee WintersJalen GrahamTatum Bethune
Changes: The extra roster spot goes to the linebacking corps which now has six players instead of five. Flannigan-Fowles is a trusted veteran on defense and special teams. Meanwhile, Winters, Graham and Bethune could all figure into the team's long-term plans at LB while helping on special teams in 2024.
Cornerback (6)
Charvarius WardDeommodore LenoirRenardo GreenDarrell Luter Jr.Isaac YiadomRock Ya-Sin
Changes: Ya-Sin gets in this time over Samuel Womack. Luter may be on the bubble, but he had a good stretch to close Sunday's game that should help his chances of sticking around.
Safety (4)
Talanoa HufangaJi'Ayir BrownGeorge OdumMalik Mustapha
Changes: Nothing different here. This should be a pretty solid group and Hufanga is on track to return soon.
Specialists (3)
K Jake MoodyP Mitch WishnowskyLS Taybor Pepper
Changes: As good as Pressley Harvin was against the Saints in Week 2 of the preseason, he's not unseating Wishnowsky.
