Falcons Recap: Kirk Cousins on injury, Zac Robinson talks pistol

.
.

The Atlanta Falcons (0-1) are trying to put Sunday's loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in their rear-view mirror as they begin preparation for Monday's crucial prime-time matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles (1-0). The team underperformed on offense and quarterback Kirk Cousins threw two interceptions in his debut.

Some questioned the Falcons' play-calling while others wondered whether or not Cousins is healthy. The 36-year-old tore his Achilles in October and the team's dependence on the pistol formation in Week 1 created speculaton that he may be having trouble taking snaps under center.

In today's Falcons recap, Cousins speaks about his health, offensive coordinator Zac Robinson talks about the pistol, and we get our first injury report of the week.

Kirk Cousins had a lot to say on Thursday, addressing his injury and providing insight into how he's adapting to the pistol. "The Achilles feels good," said Cousins. "I feel like I can move and push as I normally would." Cousins talked about his adjustment to the pistol formation, saying he might make an adjustment with his stance.

"I think I'm gonna square up my stance," the Falcons QB told reporters. "Watched some tape of Peyton Manning when he was in the pistol and had success with it. He was kind of a square stance. [I] thought he looked pretty comfortable, had a pretty good rhythm to it. I thought I'm gonna try that. I was going back to 2013. I was in the pistol a lot when I was backing up Robert Griffin."

The Falcons were criticized for their use of the pistol formation with Cousins and a lack of play-action passes in Sunday's opener. Offensive coordinator Zac Robinson discussed the team's disappointing Week 1 performance. "[I] take full responsibility with what happened on Sunday with operational things," Robinson told reporters on Thursday. The Falcons offensive coordinator was asked whether or not his play-calling had anything to do with Cousins' injury, "No. Absolutely not. It just went with the flow of the game," Robinson said before explaining his use of the pistol formation. "I like the versatility of what the pistol does bring."

The Falcons signed veteran offensive tackle Brandon Parker to the final spot on their 53-man roster. The former third-round pick has 33 career starts but started just one game in 2023. Atlanta listed Parker as Jake Matthews' primary backup at left tackle on the team's latest depth chart. If Kaleb McGary is unable to play Sunday, the team would likely look to Storm Norton before going to Parker. Parker filled the spot left open from the Taylor Heinicke trade a few weeks ago.
