Miami Dolphins' Chop Robinson meets Bucs star Tristan Wirfs: 'He sees something great in me.'

TAMPA — At the end of Wednesday's Miami Dolphins vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers joint practice, rookie edge rusher Chop Robinson was sought out by All Pro left tackle Tristan Wirfs.

"He sees something great in me, that's what he said," said Robinson, the Dolphins' first-round pick. "And of course, he's great. He just got paid."

Robinson had a few flash plays on Wednesday, and was also stood up on occasion by the Bucs' Wirfs, one of the best offensive linemen in the NFL.

"I mean, he's so quick off the ball," Robinson said. "I was reading him and I have a good get off, but as soon as I was getting off the ball, he was meeting me at the spot. So I had to use different things such as freezes and different ways to use my hands. So he's a quick player, a strong player. When he gets his hands on you, it's hard to get him off. So he's a hell of a player."

Dolphins' Chop Robinson pulls power move on Tristan Wirfs

On one memorable Wednesday rep, Chop used a power move to get up and under and lift Wirfs. It was an impressive show of strength.

"Coming into this practice, really just camp pro, after working my fastball, my swiping, everything like that, I really just wanted to peek into other things like using power and stuff like that to set up my fastball whenever," Robinson said. "So I was just sitting down with coach (Ryan) Crow, talking about that before we came out here. Came out here, just started working different things, and I was able to get underneath his pads. But he's a hell of a player. He was talking to me after, saying some things I did good, something on how I hit him. So it was just a back-and-forth competition."

Robinson and rookie edge rusher teammate Mo Kamara each had a tackle for loss in the last preseason game.

"They took it away from him," Robinson said of an apparent sack that was ruled a tackle for loss. "He was like, 'That's cool,' he's going to get one next game, try to make it two. So, you're just going to learn from that and just get two Saturday or Friday."

Coaches have noticed Robinson and Kamara pushing each other.

"Me and Mo have been training together since January for the combine," Robinson said. "So we was together, somehow we got real close doing the combine and combine training. We were bumping heads, just having fun, making jokes, just competing in everything we did in the combine training. Somehow we ended up on the same team so it was basically the same thing from doing the 40, trying to compete with that to competing out here. We just make each other better."

Miami Dolphins joint practice update: Chop, Mo team up

Robinson knows he has to hold up against the run. He feels he's getting better.

"I feel like I've progressed a lot, especially from coming from college to here and then from first day of camp to here," Robinson said. "Just really with my hands, keeping my hands inside the offensive line with the tight end. I've been able to work on that every single day and it's just become second nature. So now I've been able to get under the tight end order, the alignment pads, and I've been able to create knockbacks."
