How did we grade Georgia football after it beat Auburn in its SEC home opener?
Georgia football returned to the friendly confines of Sanford Stadium Saturday and got back to its winning ways.
The No. 5 Bulldogs notched their 27th straight home win by downing Auburn, 31-13, to extend the nation’s longest active streak.
Here’s how we graded the Bulldogs victory.
Offense: B-
Georgia didn’t turn the ball over this time, but also only produced only 381 yards of offense. Carson Beck was 23 of 29 for 240 yards and 2 touchdowns. The Bulldogs averaged 5.8 yards per play and gave up two sacks.
Defense: B
Auburn led the nation with 12 pass plays of 40 or more yards, but did not have a reception for more than 23 yards. The Bulldogs held the Tigers to 337 yards of offense and 5.8 yards per play.
Special Teams: B
Georgia pinned Auburn at its own 3 late in the second after a Brett Thorson 40-yard punt downed by Dominic Lovett. Dan Jackson blocked a 54-yard field goal try on the last play before the half. Peyton Woodring booted a 47-yard field goal with 1:50 to go. The Bulldogs got little in the return game from Anthony Evans (25 yards on 2 kick returns, 1 punt return for 5 yards).
Coaching: B
The Bulldogs weren’t hitting on all cylinders but they seemed up for a game that came after their first regular season loss since 2020. Credit for being able to get a touchdown before the half with all three units pitching in. Georgia converted a fourth-and-1 in their own territory with under 6 minutes to go.
Overall: B-
There were some costly penalties—a holding by Dylan Fairchild on a third-and-short that killed a second quarter drive and a facemask penalty on a kick return late in the first half and a hands to the face by Chaz Chambliss in the fourth quarter—but overall the Bulldogs played a clean enough game with no turnovers to not let a less talented Auburn team make it tight at the end.
