Game notes: While Tigers fans may be excited to watch their team face one of the best and most exciting young pitchers in years, you can bet Tigers hitters will not feel the same way. But that's for Game 2.

Game 1 of this doubleheader is a matchup of two of the better pitchers in baseball right now. Jones has not allowed more than three runs in any of his 11 starts this season. Skubal might be the Tigers' best young pitcher since Justin Verlander, and is an AL Cy Young contender. The Tigers are without their leading hitter Kerry Carpenter, who was just placed on the 10-day injured list with lower back soreness.

Paul Skenes, known for winning the national championship at LSU, throwing absolute gas that consistently comes in at over 100 mph and for dating star LSU gymnast, Livvy Dunne, will be making his fourth career MLB start Wednesday — his 22nd birthday.

Skenes, the No. 1 pick in the 2023 draft, was called up earlier this month and the early results have not been disappointing. His fastball averaged 100.1 mph in his debut against the Chicago Cubs, the highest for any starting pitcher since it started being tracked in 2008. In his second outing, also against the Cubs, he struck out 11 batters and allowed just one baserunner via a walk with no hits. His third outing was also dominant, giving up just one run on six hits, but with just three strikeouts compared to the 11 his last time out. Ho-hum, he's just casually dominating the greatest hitters in the world.

Whether it's his flame-throwing pitches, his mustache, or, uh, his girlfriend, Skenes has quickly caught on with fans of all ages.

The Tigers will send out Montero for his MLB debut, after they called on him to be the club's 27th man — over Matt Manning. Montero, 23, has a 4.40 ERA in 30⅔ innings over nine starts in 2024 with Triple-A Toledo. He has 17 walks and 36 strikeouts, and is the Tigers' No. 7 prospect according to MLB Pipeline.
