Tigers vs. Guardians in Game 2 of ALDS: Lineups, time, TV, channel, streaming info

We’re not saying Game 2 of the ALDS is important, but just 12 of the 116 teams to lose Game 2 of a Division Series (in either league) since 1995 — regardless of what they did in Game 1 — have made it to the World Series, and just four of those have won the whole thing.

So … no pressure, Tarik Skubal. The good news for the Detroit Tigers: They’ve got the guy they want on the Progressive Field mound today, as the left-hander has a 2.86 ERA with 100 strikeouts in his 13 starts this year following a Tigers loss. Even better news: They’re 9-4 in those starts, including a victory over the Guardians (their ALDS opponent, in case you missed the headlines) on July 22.

The Guardians, meanwhile, will be starting a lefty with some solid familiarity with the Tigers: Matthew Boyd, who pitched for Detroit for parts of eight seasons (including 15 starts last season). Tommy John surgery cost Boyd half of last season, and most of this one: he has just eight starts with the Guardians. But since returning from the IL in August, Boyd has been solid, with 46 strikeouts and 13 walks in 39 2/3 innings.

More: Freep’s Tigers beat writer is noticeably absent from coverage. Here’s why.

Of course, even if the Tigers lose today, their season isn’t over; they’ll be coming back to Comerica Park for at least one playoff game — Wednesday at 4:08 p.m., in case you want to start working on your get-out-of-work excuse now — the first postseason game for the franchise since October 2014.
