Detroit Tigers tweak pitching schedule for upcoming series vs. Philadelphia Phillies

Jack Flaherty is healthy for the Detroit Tigers.

But the right-hander— who recently recovered from lower back tightness — isn't going to start Wednesday's series finale against the Philadelphia Phillies at Comerica Park.

More specifically, the Tigers won't use any of their current five starters for that game because they want to give the entire rotation an extra day of rest.

"I think all year you've heard me talk about trying to find ways to get an entire rotation an extra day when we can," manager A.J. Hinch said. "We're in the part of the season where that's even more critical, so we're going to look for a way to push back the entire rotation. ... We're going to come up with a different solution and push the entire rotation back."

The Tigers will start right-hander Casey Mize (against right-hander Aaron Nola) in Monday's game and left-hander Tarik Skubal (against left-hander Ranger Suarez) in Tuesday's game.

Hinch wouldn't reveal the plan for Wednesday's game against the Phillies. The Tigers, though, have two potential options: Triple-A Toledo right-hander Keider Montero and a flurry of relievers in a bullpen-only situation.

Montero, who made his MLB debut in a May 29 doubleheader, pitched Friday, so he is lined up to make his next start Wednesday. He has a 5.03 ERA with 30 walks and 54 strikeouts across 48⅓ innings in 13 starts for the Mud Hens.

As for the bullpen, the Tigers could use some combination of right-hander Beau Brieske, left-hander Joey Wentz and right-hander Mason Englert to cover nine innings in Wednesday's game.

"We haven't officially mapped out the exact plan yet," Hinch said, "but it's somewhat related to how the next few games can go, but also evaluating our options that will be available to us."

Meanwhile, former Tigers right-hander Spencer Turnbull is scheduled to start Wednesday for the Phillies, taking the place of right-hander Taijuan Walker, who landed on the injured list with inflammation in his right index finger.

The Tigers non-tendered Turnbull in November 2023, then Turnbull signed a one-year, $2 million contract with the Phillies in February 2024.

This season, Turnbull owns a 2.63 ERA with 18 walks and 56 strikeouts across 51⅓ innings in 16 games (six starts).

Flaherty, meanwhile, will only see his start pushed back one day, as he's slated to start Thursday's series opener against the Los Angeles Angels in Anaheim, California.

Jackson Jobe's second rehab start

Right-hander Jackson Jobe, the second-best pitching prospect in baseball, completed his second rehab start with High-A West Michigan in his return from a left hamstring strain.

The 21-year-old will report to Double-A Erie after completing his rehab assignment.

In Sunday's start, Jobe retired all nine batters he faced across three scoreless innings against the Dayton Dragons, the Cincinnati Reds' affiliate. He struck out four batters: Carlos Jorge, Sal Stewart, Hector Rodriguez and Ethan O'Donnell.

Jobe threw 32 pitches in his second rehab start after throwing 29 pitches in his first rehab start. He seems ready to return to Double-A Erie, where he posted a 2.16 ERA across 16⅔ innings in five starts before the injury.
