Details on why Georgia football inside linebacker Smael Mondon is missing Auburn game
Georgia football will play without Samel Mondon, one of its most experienced defensive players, Saturday against Auburn.
The Bulldogs could also be without Mondon for more games ahead.
Coach Kirby Smart would not specify the injury or give a timetable for his return, reporter Molly McGrath, who is working the game for ABC, said on SEC Nation Saturday morning.
Mondon was spotted Saturday walking across the field using crutches with his left foot in a boot.
Mondon had offseason surgery for a stress fracture in that foot that forced him to miss spring practices. He missed the Orange Bowl win over Florida State.
“It was like nagging injuries throughout the season,” Mondon said this spring. “I ended up breaking it at the end of the year.”
Center Jared Wilson has a foot sprain, McGrath reported. He came out of the Alabama game in the second half for one snap before returning.
Drew Bobo, in his third year in the program, is snapping to Carson Beck during pregame warmups with Wilson working with backup Gunner Stockton. He lined up with the starting five later.
Wider receivers London Humphreys (mononucleosis) and Sacovie White (undisclosed) are warming up pregame. They both were listed probable Friday night after missing the Alabama game but are not on the updated report 90 minutes before kickoff.
Defensive linemen Mykel Williams (ankle) and Jordan Hall (legs) and Wilson (foot) are listed as game-time decisions. Williams and Hall were warming up pregame.
Mondon showed up on the SEC availability report Wednesday as out after being made available to reporters Monday before practice.
Mondon’s 28 career starts are the third most of any defensive player.
The 6-foot-3, 230-pound senior has 172 career tackles and entered the week fifth on the team this season with 17 tackles.
Georgia can turn to CJ Allen, Raylen Wilson and Jalon Walker, who also plays on the edge, among others at inside linebacker in Mondon’s absence.
