Dan Campbell on possible Lions trade: 'Maybe it happens, maybe it doesn't'
With the NFL trade deadline one week away, Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell said there is no guarantee his team adds pass rush help to its thin defensive line.
"Look, maybe it happens, maybe it doesn’t, I don’t know," Campbell said Tuesday in his weekly radio appearance on WXYT-FM (97.1). "I honestly don’t know. I feel like it changes every day and so we’ll just take it as it comes and like I say, this is the squad and this is the squad we’re going to get ready to play every week."
The Lions are down three of their top edge rushers after losing Aidan Hutchinson. Marcus Davenport and Derrick Barnes to potentially season-ending injuries.
Davenport is out for the year with a torn triceps, Hutchinson will miss four to six months with a broken leg and Barnes is out indefinitely with a knee injury.
The Lions have been checking on available pass rushers since Hutchinson's injury in a Week 6 win over the Dallas Cowboys, though Campbell has said they're in no rush to make a deal before the NFL's Nov. 5 deadline.

If they do make a trade, the move likely would be for a complementary piece for a defense that currently ranks eighth in points allowed (19.1 ppg) and is tied for second with 15 takeaways.
"Honestly we’re still looking into it," Campbell said. "It’s not like this has stopped. Don’t forget, some of these really good players or players that you think can help, if they’re good, most teams won’t let them go. And so we’re working through all of that, Brad (Holmes is) doing a great job and this continues."
On Monday, Campbell said there "could be" something imminent brewing on the trade front, then repeated that line with a playful jump when asked if Holmes had brought him a deal to evaluate.
Campbell said Tuesday people are "wasting energy" reading anything into his jump, and reiterated his confidence in the Lions' current edge group.
Josh Paschal missed last week's win over the Tennessee Titans for medical reasons, but is the Lions' top remaining defensive end. Defensive tackle Levi Onwuzurike was effective playing most of his snaps against the Titans at end, and the Campbell said the Lions were pleased with the play of backups James Houston, Isaiah Thomas and Al-Quadin Muhammad, who played as a practice squad elevation last week.
"I thought Houston was better this game," Campbell said. "Muhammad I thought did exactly what we thought he would and what we wanted him to do, man, bring your lunch pail and go to work and just be disruptive, play violent, play physical. Finish on the plays, and I thought he did that. And so that was good. And he’s experienced. He’s played in this league, so he’s got some awareness about him at that position.
"And then look, Isaiah did a few things, too, he’s just, he’s young. He’s young and he’s a little bit raw, he hasn’t played a lot, so this is a chance to get him in there and get him some work, too, but there’s going to be growing pains when you’re a guy who hasn’t played in this league very much. But I was – look, I was encouraged by all of them and I did think they all got a little bit better or did things we thought they would do or hoped that they would do."
