Colt McCoy among 12 Longhorns inducted into Texas Athletics Hall of Honor

Colt McCoy doesn't always get to all of Chris Del Conte's calls.

The former Texas football quarterback is a busy man these days, kickstarting a television career in the booth calling college games. And Del Conte, Texas' athletic director, buzzes him about 10 times a month, McCoy said.

But when Del Conte called McCoy to inform him he'd been selected for induction into the Texas Athletics Hall of Honor in 2024, McCoy happened to pick up.

"It was him and Chris Plonsky and a couple of other people in the room," McCoy said. "...I'm glad the schedule worked out for me to be able to be here."

ONE OF THE GREATS: After 9 NFL seasons, Alex Okafor creating space in the Longhorns media landscape

Volleyball legend Mira Topic Losert was on her way to the beach when the call came. Basketball star Reggie Freeman didn't recognize the number and thought it was a robocall. Football great Alex Okafor was out mowing the lawn.

Eventually, the message reached all 12 of the 2024 inductees one way or another, and they were recognized for their achievements during a ceremony at the LBJ Auditorium and Conference Center on UT's campus Friday night.

"I'm very honored," Topic Losert, who grew up in Croatia and now lives in Egypt, said. "I'm so happy to be here and see all my friends. My heart is really big."

The full list of inductees is as follows:

  • Julie Cooper Bliemel, women's swimming and diving, 1989-92

  • Reggie Freeman, men's basketball, 1994-97

  • Marquise Goodwin, football and track & field, 2009-12

  • Farley Taylor Lansing, women's tennis, 1994-97

  • Mira Topic Losert, volleyball, 2001-04

  • Colt McCoy, football, 2006-09

  • Alex Okafor, football, 2009-12

  • Omar Quintanilla, baseball, 2001-03

  • Lexy Bennett Skaggs, softball, 2009-12

  • Karen Nelson Walters, women's track & field, 1985-88

  • John Fields, men's golf coach, 1997-present

  • Carie Graves, rowing coach, 1998-2014

The celebration marked a reunion for McCoy, Goodwin and Okafor, who briefly overlapped on the 2009 Texas team that reached the national title game.

That season was the final campaign of McCoy's Texas career. The quarterback was twice named a consensus first-team All-American, and was the winningest quarterback in NCAA history at 45-8 when he finished at the college level.

"Just very humbled and honored," McCoy said. "So many awesome athletes and coaches who have given so much to the school are already in. To come alongside them and represent the football team is pretty cool."

McCoy threw Goodwin the pass that led to his first collegiate touchdown reception — a 14-yarder that gave the Longhorns a second-half lead against Oklahoma.

Goodwin went on to find the end zone 11 times total during his four-year stay at Texas, including three rushing touchdowns and a kick return TD. He racked up 1,769 scrimmage yards on the gridiron. On the track, he twice won NCAA titles in the long jump, and competed for Team USA at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

"This weekend means a lot for me," Goodwin said. "Not just for me, but for my family, and the people who believed in me and cheered for me and pushed me along the way. Fans, spectators, even the people who rooted against us, they kind of propelled us on those game days."

Okafor earned All-American honors with the Longhorns and went on to win a Super Bowl with the Kansas City Chiefs. He finished his Texas career with 150 total tackles, 36 tackles for loss and 23 sacks, including 12.5 sacks during his senior season.

"You don't get to come back as much as you want," he said. "So when you do come back, it brings back all of the old memories. It's taking me back to freshman or sophomore year. You start remembering some of the names that you played with. You start seeing old friends."
