Cleveland Guardians vs. Toronto Blue Jays recap
CLEVELAND — The Guardians went hunting for the sweep against the Toronto Blue Jays Sunday afternoon and got it with a 6-5 win at Progressive Field.
Cleveland had outscored its Canadian counterparts 13-4 in the first two games of the series entering Sunday, which brought the Guardians' record to 48-26, the third-best record in the American League entering the day's slate of games.
Triston McKenzie took the mound for the Guardians hoping for a rebound outing after he failed to escape the third inning in his last start. This was another short outing, but that was largely due to a 40-minute rain delay.
Here's how the game unfolded.
Guardians beat the Blue Jays 6-5
Emmanuel Clase earned his AL-leading 24th save in the ninth inning to complete the sweep of the Blue Jays, though Toronto did put the tying run in scoring position before the Guardians closer slammed the door shut by getting George Springer to ground into a fielder's choice. Clase still has a sub-1.00 ERA this season.
Guardians enter the ninth inning with a 6-5 lead over Blue Jays; Emmanuel Clase entering
The Guardians couldn't tack on any insurance runs in the eighth, and they'll enter the ninth with a 6-5 lead and closer Emmanuel Clase entering the game.
Darren McCaughan roughed up, Blue Jays trim Guardians lead to one run
Darren McCaughan gave up a solo home run to Spencer Horwitz, and it didn't get much better after that. The Blue Jays hit just about everything hard, with five batted balls having an exit velocity of at least 105 mph.
The Blue Jays sliced the Guardians lead to one run, 6-5, before McCaughan was able to escape the inning.
Johnathan Rodriguez in right field hasn't exactly helped Guardians pitchers out today, though. He's had a few hard-hit balls land just in front of him. Neither was an error, of course, but both might have been able to be caught.
Josh Naylor hits home run No. 20
Josh Naylor has already tied his career high for home runs in a season, and he's only played in 72 games.
Naylor just launched home run No. 20 of the year, a no-doubt solo shot to right field that included quite the bat toss after he admired it for a second.
Naylor launched two home runs recently, and has combined with Kwan and Jose Ramirez to form a pretty lethal trio atop the Guardians lineup.
Steven Kwan sets career high with seventh home run of the season; Guardians lead Blue Jays 5-3
Steven Kwan has only played 49 games this season, but he's already set a career high with seven home runs.
Kwan's seventh of the year, a solo shot to right field, gives the Guardians a 5-3 lead in the fourth inning.
Kwan entered 2024 with 11 career home runs, and he's on his way to easily top that number in 2024 alone. He was already viewed as one of the most difficult outs in baseball, so the addition of some extra power to his arsenal has added a new dimension to the top of the lineup.
Guardians-Blue Jays score: Cleveland takes a 4-3 lead
After the rain delay, Johnathan Rodriguez drew a walk to tie it, and Brayan Rocchio grounded into a double play, but it was enough to bring in the go-ahead.
Triston McKenzie's day is done after the delay at just 74 pitches. He allowed three runs in three innings and struck out six, but the two home runs continued a troubling trend.
Play resumes in Guardians-Blue Jays game
Play is again underway at Progressive Field after a 40-minute delay.
Though, the warning track from foul pole to foul pole is basically still a river.
Johnathan Rodriguez is up with the bases loaded and nobody out and the Guardians trailing 3-2 in the third inning.
Guardians-Blue Jays in a rain delay
With the Guardians threatening a rally down 3-2, the tarp as been pulled and today's game is in a rain delay.
The expected first pitch to resume play is set for 3:30 p.m.
Daniel Schneemann hits RBI single; Josh Naylor has arm stepped on
Daniel Schneemann hit an RBI single to the gap in left-center field, but it wasn't as productive of a play as it could have been.
As Josh Naylor rounded third as the would-be tying run, Guardians third base coach Rouglas Odor held up the stay sign, though the Blue Jays were misplaying the ball in the outfield. Odor tried to change the sign to go home, but Naylor had already started to turn back to third.
As he slid back into third, Blue Jays infielder Addison Barger stepped on Naylor's arm.
Naylor was checked by team trainers but is remaining in the game.
Spencer Horwitz home run makes it 3-1 Blue Jays over Guardians; Triston McKenzie now leads AL in homers allowed
Spencer Horwitz drilled a solo home run off the right field foul pole to make it 3-1 Blue Jays.
Triston McKenzie has now allowed 17 home runs this season, which as of this typing is the most in the American League.
McKenzie was able to pitch around some trouble later in the inning, holding the Blue Jays lead at 3-1.
David Fry has left the game; Bo Naylor now catching
Bo Naylor has replaced David Fry at catcher. The team has not released any information as to why Fry is out of the game.
Update: Fry left Sunday's game with right elbow inflammation.
Angel Martinez has first career MLB hit
Guardians infield prospect Angel Martinez has his first hit in the majors, a single to right field. Martinez was promoted to the majors as Gabriel Arias hit the Family Medical Emergency List a few days ago.
The Guardians still trail 2-1.
David Fry single cuts Blue Jays lead in half
The Guardians got one of those runs back in the first inning, as David Fry singled home a run to make it 2-1.
Blue Jays tag Triston McKenzie for two runs in the first inning; Toronto leads Guardians 2-0
Triston McKenzie has struggled as of late. Sunday's opening inning didn't go his way, either.
With one on and one out, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. launched a two-run home run off of McKenzie, giving the Blue Jays an early 2-0 lead. It was Guerrero's second home run this series, but then again, he's used to stringing together homers in this ballpark after his classic battle with Pete Alonso in the 2019 Home Run Derby.
McKenzie entered Sunday with 15 home runs allowed this season, which is near the top of a leader board of which he wants no part.
