Clemson football's Avieon Terrell is among nation's best cornerbacks, more overreactions vs FSU
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — No. 14 Clemson football dominated Florida State, winning 29-13 on Saturday at Doak Campbell Stadium.
The Tigers (4-1, 3-0 ACC) carried their home momentum on the road to outgain FSU 500-250. Quarterback Cade Klubnik and Clemson's offense didn't score almost at will like the unit did in its past three games but made enough plays to win its first true road game. Defensively, Clemson contained FSU (1-5, 1-4) without its starting quarterback, DJ Uiagalelei, recording two sacks and forcing one turnover.
Here are three overreactions from Clemson's third conference win of the season:
Clemson football's Avieon Terrell enters name in Jim Thorpe Award conversation
Terrell recorded an interception in the first half to and FSU drive. He has recorded an interception in two consecutive games and forced a turnover in three straight. Since becoming a late-season starter in 2023, he has cemented himself as Clemson's No. 1 cornerback.
Terrell recorded six tackles, 1.5 for loss, in addition to the interception Saturday. His play during Clemson's first five games deserves consideration not only for first-team All-ACC but the Jim Thorpe Award, given to the top defensive back in the country.
Clemson football's field goal kicking has become a noticeable issue
The Tigers received flashbacks from last season when kicker Robert Gunn III had issues kicking. He missed three field goal attempts and an extra point during the first three games in 2023.
After having no issues in its first three games, Clemson kicker Nolan Hauser and the field goal unit faced adversity. Two of Hauser's kicks were blocked Saturday with pressure coming from the left side of the protection. This comes after the freshman's point-after-touchdown attempt was blocked against Stanford last week when it was kicked low. The blocks had no bearing on Saturday's game, but it is an issue to monitor as the season progresses.

Clemson football's defense finally shuts down the run
Albeit against the worst rushing team in the ACC, the Tigers' run defense finally held a team under 100 rushing yards this season. They gave up at least 140 rushing in their first four games, including a season-high 236 yards last week against Stanford.
Clemson held FSU to 22 rushing on 23 carries. Five players recorded a tackle for loss with Terrell and defensive lineman T.J. Parker having 1.5. No FSU rusher had more than 20 yards. The Tigers need to replicate this performance next week at Wake Forest (noon Saturday, ESPN) to show their continued growth in this area.
