Clemson baseball outlasts Coastal Carolina 4-3 to advance to NCAA regional finals

CLEMSON — Clemson baseball took care of No. 3 seed Coastal Carolina on Saturday, winning 4-3 in the Clemson Regional at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.

Cam Cannarella's go-ahead RBI sacrifice fly to left field in the top of the ninth inning gave the No. 1 seed Tigers (43-14) the win. Alden Mathes getting hit by a pitch and Jacob Hinderleider's double to left-center field set up Cannarella's crucial RBI.

Clemson never trailed against the Chanticleers (35-24). Hinderleider was 5-for-5 with a double, and Cam Cannarella went 1-for-3 with three RBIs.

The Tigers will face the winner between No. 3 Coastal Carolina and No. 4 seed High Point at 6 p.m. ET Sunday. If the Tigers win, they will advance to the super regionals.

Aidan Knaak's impresses in NCAA tournament debut

During the final weeks of the season, the freshman's workload dipped to prepare him for the postseason. He didn't pitch against Louisville in April and received an extra week of rest after Clemson exited early in the ACC tournament.

The maintenance served Knaak well, throwing 90 pitches, recording six strikeouts but allowing six hits and two runs in six innings. He faced the minimum number of hitters in three innings and escaped jams in the first and sixth. The All-ACC first-team selection's third strikeout Saturday set Clemson's single-season strikeout record for a freshman with 100.

Clemson baseball's struggles to move runners on again

After leaving 11 runners on base and hitting 5-for-22 with runners on in the win against High Point Friday, the Tigers failed to move runners on in back-to-back games.

Despite recording 10 hits, Clemson left 10 runners on and went 6-for-21 with runners on Saturday.
