Clemson baseball survives High Point, wins 4-3 off Tristan Bissetta's walk-off RBI single

CLEMSON — Clemson baseball escaped No. 4 seed High Point on Friday, winning 4-3 in the Clemson Regional at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.

Tristan Bissetta's walk-off RBI single gave the No. 1 Tigers (42-14) the win. Blake Wright's first-pitch double in the ninth set up Bissetta's critical hit.

Clemson and the Panthers (34-26) were in a battle for all nine innings, with neither able to separate. Cam Cannarella was 1-for-3 with an RBI, and Jarren Purify went 1-for-3 with two RBIs.

Clemson will face No. 3 seed Coastal Carolina at 5 p.m. ET Saturday. The winner will advance to the Clemson Regional finals to play the loser's bracket winner between Vanderbilt vs. High Point.

Tristan Smith's up-and-down outing in first NCAA tournament start

Tristan Smith received an extra week of rest after Clemson exited early in the ACC tournament. The time off did wonders, as his performance showed in the first three innings, but wore off in the next three. He threw 99 pitches, recorded nine strikeouts but allowed six hits and three runs (one earned) in 5⅓ innings.

Smith, who has been dealing with a lingering ankle injury that he suffered on March 16, did not allow a hit or run until the fourth, when he gave up three hits and two unearned runs. He ran into trouble again in the sixth, when he allowed two hits that gave High Point the lead.

Clemson baseball's bottom four hitters get loose

With High Point starting pitcher Gus Hughes containing Clemson's first five batters to 2-for-18, the Tigers' No. 6 through 9 batters came through. Those players — Bissetta, Jack Crighton, Jacob Jarrell and Purify — combined to go 6-for-12 to score two runs off Hughes.

Those four players' contributions were critical for Clemson to stay afloat.
