What channel is the Bills game on? How to watch Buffalo Bills vs New York Jets

ORCHARD PARK - As if the Buffalo Bills don’t have enough issues while riding a two-game losing streak, now they head to New York to take on a Jets team that just fired its head coach, Robert Saleh.

Why is that a potential problem, you ask?

Coaching changes midstream usually don’t work out too well in that particular season. In the Super Bowl era which dates back to 1966, only one team that changed coaches during a season made the playoffs that year - the 2021 Raiders when Jon Gruden resigned and Rich Bisaccia took over.

Before that, the last team to change coaches and make the playoffs was the 1961 Houston Oilers in the AFL, so long term, it seems like a bit of a Hail Mary from the panicked Jets.

But there is such a thing as the first game bump, where a team is energized by the coaching change and perhaps performs better than expected in the interim coach’s debut. Going back to 2010, interim coaches are 16-13 in their first game, though in the last two years it’s 2-4.

Aaron Rodgers and Robert Saleh never seemed to click, and now Saleh is out as Jets coach.
Aaron Rodgers and Robert Saleh never seemed to click, and now Saleh is out as Jets coach.

One of those came last December when the Chargers fired Brandon Staley the week they were playing Buffalo and lost Giff Smith’s debut, though even without star QB Justin Herbert, Los Angeles kept it tight and the Bills barely won 24-22.

That 16-13 record doesn’t look all that impressive, but remember, generally teams that fire coaches during the season are downtrodden and going nowhere. The Jets are a different story because they have an outstanding defense, they have an aging but still Hall of Fame-bound quarterback in Aaron Rodgers, and if they beat the Bills Monday night, they would move into first place in the AFC East.

This coaching change was surprising given all that, and if it sparks the Jets, who like the Bills have dropped their last two games, then it’s the right move interim man Jeff Ulbrich can earn a spot alongside Bisaccia in a rather exclusive club.

“Well, unfortunate part of our business, number one,” Bills coach Sean McDermott said. “Two is, you know, aware of the coaching change, and really for us, we’ve got to focus on our team and the pieces that we can control and that’s really us in our process today.”
