Buffalo Bills sign quarterback who recently lost backup job with AFC East rival

When the Buffalo Bills released quarterbacks Ben DiNucci and Anthony Brown, two players who had been with the team less than two weeks, it felt like it was an acknowledgment that Mitchell Trubisky would be good to go as the backup in Week 1.

However, in signing journeyman Mike White Tuesday night with the intention of placing him on the practice squad, that might be an indication that Trubisky isn’t going to be available when the season begins Sept. 8 against Arizona and White would be elevated to serve as Josh Allen’s No. 2.

It was clear the Bills could not go with DiNucci or Brown as their backup, so general manager Brandon Beane settled on White, one of several viable candidates who were available once teams cut their rosters by the 4 p.m. deadline.

The 29-year-old White was originally a fifth-round pick of the Cowboys out of Western Kentucky in 2018, but he never got into a game for Dallas. He finally made his NFL playing debut in 2021 with the Jets and across two seasons he started seven games and went 2-5, completing 62.2% of his passes for 2,145 yards with eight TDs and 12 interceptions.

Two of his starts came against the Bills. In 2021 he completed 24 of 44 passes for 251 yards but threw four interceptions in a 45-17 Jets loss, and in 2022 he completed 27 of 44 for 268 yards in a 20-12 Jets loss, a game he exited after suffering a rib injury.

The highlight of his time in New York came on Oct. 31, 2021 when he completed 37 of 45 passes for 405 yards with three TDs and two picks as the Jets stunned Joe Burrow and the Bengals 34-31. White threw two TD passes in the final 4:36, one of those to current Bills running back Ty Johnson, the other to ex-Bills tight end Tyler Kroft. He also tossed a two-point conversion to ex-Bills receiver Jamison Crowder.

Last year he moved on to Miami where he saw only mop-up duty in six games, attempting six passes.
