Buffalo Bills play Monday night vs team desperate for a win: Details about NFL Week 3 game
Last season, the Jacksonville Jaguars were 8-3, leading the AFC South and seemingly headed to the postseason before a massive meltdown that saw them lose five of their last six games to miss the tournament.
Given the talent on their team - which the Bills saw way back in Week 5 when they lost 25-20 to Jacksonville in London - the collapse was pretty surprising. And if the first two weeks of the 2024 season are any indication, the Jaguars have not recovered.
They blew a 14-0 lead to Miami and lost 20-17, and Sunday in their home opener, their defense allowed Cleveland quarterback Deshaun Watson to produce scores on four of his first five drives for a 16-3 lead, and the Jaguars were never able to claw back and fell 18-13.

It was another terrible finish, too. Down 16-13, Trevor Lawrence was tackled for a safety with 1:44 left to play, and after the Jaguars got the ball back with 1:27 to go Lawrence moved them to the Browns 33, but a Hail Mary in the end zone fell incomplete.
So now, the Jaguars are a desperate 0-2 team coming to Orchard Park, and the Bills will have their work cut out for them because that is always one of the most dangerous opponents to play.
Buffalo Bills key to victory
Josh Allen has essentially been a game manager and that’s been more than enough to get the Bills off to a 2-0 start. But coming back home to play a wounded team, the Bills should lean into their passing game and start getting Dalton Kincaid, Curtis Samuel and Keon Coleman more involved than they’ve been so far.
Jacksonville Jaguars key to victory
On the road, the Jaguars have to get off to a good start, similar to what they did down in Miami before they imploded. With both of Buffalo’s starting linebackers, Matt Milano and Terrel Bernard, out of the game the Jaguars should try to get their running back duo of Travis Etienne and Tank Bigsby going and open up the play action game for Lawrence, especially when Dorian Williams is on the field.
Bills vs Jaguars matchup to watch
The Jaguars lost one of their best players, CB Tyson Campbell, in the Miami game. Montaric Brown is now starting in his place and he made 11 tackles against Cleveland because the Browns kept throwing his way. Brown could be vulnerable, and Jacksonville’s other CB, ex-Bill Ronald Darby, was picked on by the Dolphins. Josh Allen should have plenty of opportunities to exploit Jacksonville on the outside.
Top players for Jaguars
▶ QB Trevor Lawrence: He threw for only 162 yards against the Dolphins, and then against the Browns, he was only able to produce one touchdown as he was sacked four times, including the killer safety, and lost a fumble. He has completed just 50.9% of his passes in the first two games.
▶ RB Travis Etienne: His fumble in Week 1 turned the game around in Miami’s favor. Against the Browns he rushed for 52 yards and scored the Jaguars only TD. Early in his third season, he already sits fifth all-time on the Jaguars career rushing list.
▶ WR Gabe Davis: The former Bills makes his return to Buffalo (along with C Mitch Morse). So far he has been quiet as a Jaguar with six catches for 105 yards.
▶ WR Brian Thomas: The rookie first-round pick, who was mocked by many to the Bills in the draft, caught a 66-yard pass to set up the Jaguars only TD Sunday, and he has six catches for 141 yards in the first two games.
▶ DE Josh Hines-Allen: Formerly Josh Allen, he is Jacksonville’s best pass rusher and he recorded his first sack of the season Sunday against Watson.
▶ LB Foyesade Oluokun: Through two games he has made 19 tackles and a sack.
▶ S Andre Cisco: The former Syracuse standout is now in his fifth season and he has seven career interceptions.
Who wins? Bills 26, Jaguars 17
Yes, the Jaguars losing to the Browns to fall to 0-2 wasn’t the best result for the Bills, but just because Jacksonville has its back firmly pressed against a wall, that shouldn’t be an excuse for Buffalo. The Bills are the better team in this matchup, they are at home, and if they play a clean game like they did in Miami when they had no turnovers and committed only one penalty, they should be able to move the ball against this defense and control the game.
