Blake Burke sets Tennessee baseball record for longest hitting streak at 28 games
Blake Burke set a Tennessee baseball record Friday that had stood for nearly 50 years, but it was not established until following the game.
Burke holds a 28-game hitting streak after an eighth-inning single at Kentucky. The play was originally ruled an error on Wildcats first baseman Ryan Nicholson. It was changed to a hit in a postgame stat correction, which meant Burke's hitless night became a one-hit night and a program record.
Condredge Holloway set the record of 27 games in 1975.
No. 3 Tennessee (31-7, 10-6 SEC) lost 5-3 to the No. 5 Wildcats (32-5, 15-1) in the opener at Kentucky Proud Park.
Blake Burke sets Tennessee baseball record for longest hitting streak
Burke was going to end up tied with Holloway for the longest hitting streak in program history when the game concluded. He was 0-for-4 with a groundout and a pair of flyouts until the error in the eighth was changed to a hit.
Burke had matched Holloway's record Tuesday with a single in the first inning against Bellarmine at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
Blake Burke is chasing the Tennessee baseball home run record
Burke currently holds the career home run record at Tennessee. His 43rd was a grand slam in his second at-bat against Bellarmine.
Burke is one homer ahead of teammate Christian Moore, who has 42.
Both broke the record of 40 held by Luc Lipcius, who set it when Burke and Moore were freshmen in 2022.
