Bills S Mike Edwards injures hamstring

PITTSFORD, N.Y. (WIVB) — Buffalo Bills safety Mike Edwards will miss at least the next week of training camp with a hamstring injury, coach Sean McDermott said Monday.

Edwards, who was competing for a starting spot after signing a one-year contract with the Bills in March, got hurt during Sunday’s practice at St. John Fisher University.

“It’s a part of the game, on one hand,” McDermott said. “The other part is, in order to get the scheme down the way you need to get it down, you need to be out there. But Mike’s a pro. He’s been around it before, so I’m sure he’ll do his best to stay up as best as he can on the mental end of things here out the scheme.”

After missing minicamp and part of organized team activities with an undisclosed injury, the 28-year-old Edwards was alternating with Damar Hamlin and rookie Cole Bishop in practicing alongside Taylor Rapp and the defensive starters through the first four training camp practices. The sixth-year player spent last season with the Kansas City Chiefs after beginning his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who drafted Edwards out of Kentucky in the third round in 2019.

The Bills had gone through training camp without a notable injury before Sunday. Wide receiver Chase Claypool also sustained a toe injury on Sunday and is listed as day-to-day, while the other Mike Edwards on Buffalo’s roster, an offensive lineman, has entered concussion protocol.

Star linebacker Matt Milano, returning from a broken leg, defensive end Von Miller, two years from having knee surgery, and All-Pro slot cornerback Taron Johnson were rested Monday as the Bills held their first padded practice of training camp. Running back James Cook returned to practice after missing a practice to attend to a personal matter.
