Bills sign fan favorite for third stint with team to boost defensive line

The Buffalo Jills cheerleading squad disbanded in 2014 but the Bills are bringing bring back their biggest cheerleader.

Defensive tackle Jordan Phillips signed on for his third stint with the Bills on Wednesday.

Phillips' hoisting of Josh Allen like they're Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Gray in "Dirty Dancing" can begin anew.

Phillips was released by the Dallas Cowboys on Tuesday. Shortly after, he posted a photo on Instagram of his time with the Bills with the caption "Run it back." He wants to return to Buffalo but it's unclear if the feeling is mutual.

Buffalo also signed former defensive end Quinton Jefferson, who played for the Bills in 2020. Buffalo did not make any trades before the league deadline but had two open roster spots after releasing safety Mike Edwards and placing Smoot on injured reserve.

Phillips has been effusive in his praise for the Bills and their fans. He didn't want to leave the first time but signed a massive free agent contract elsewhere. Buffalo chose to get younger at the position after Phillips' second tenure ended last season.

Phillips played 34 snaps with the Cowboys over the first two games with one tackle, but was placed on injured reserve with a wrist injury that required surgery. That's what has led to the Bills' attrition on the defensive line. Buffalo defensive tackle DeWayne Carter and defensive end Dawuane Smoot are on injured reserve after undergoing wrist surgeries.

Phillips is a fan favorite who spent 2018, 2019, 2022 and 2023 in Buffalo, where he had his best years. He made the playoffs three times with the Bills, including winning the latter two of Buffalo's four consecutive AFC East titles.

Phillips, 32, had a career-high 9.5 sacks in 2019, second among defensive tackles, only trailing three-time Defensive Player of the Year Aaron Donald. At 6-foot-6 and 330 pounds, Phillips is athletic with nimble feet.

He parlayed his career season into a three-year, $30 million deal with the Arizona Cardinals in 2020. Arizona released him after two seasons. Buffalo brought Phillips back on more cap-friendly one-year contracts in 2022 and 2023.

Phillips has said Buffalo feels like home. He revealed his watches all the Bills games even if he's playing for another team, and attended the Bills "13 seconds" AFC divisional round loss to the Chiefs on Jan. 23, 2022 in Kansas City to cheer on Buffalo.

“I didn’t want to leave; I wish I didn’t,” Phillips said when he signed again in Buffalo in 2022. “My end goal was always to come back here and I’m happy it worked out. A lot of smiley faces, everybody’s giddy, I’m real giddy. I haven’t slept yet. And I have so much energy right now that it’s a great feeling.”

Phillips certainly brings the energy after big plays and with trash talk. His celebrations with massive wingspan extended wide and raised arms to pump up the home crowd are engrained in Bills' fans memories.

“It’s just the family aspect here that really draws me to this," said Phillips in 2022. "You’re playing for more than money here and that’s just nice. Everybody has each other’s backs, people’s kids grow up together, it’s just a nice atmosphere to be around.”

Phillips was a Miami Dolphins second round pick in 2015 out of Oklahoma. The Dolphins released him after a sideline outburst regarding his playing time in Week 4 of 2018 and the Bills scooped him up the next day off waivers.

Phillips has recorded 182 tackles, 36 tackles for loss, 24 sacks, 3 forced fumbles, 2 fumble recoveries and 1 interception over 122 games, with 62 starts. Fifty-four of those games were with the Bills.
