Biggest Week 1 Miami Dolphins overreactions... or not?

MIAMI GARDENS - The Miami Dolphins held 40 - forty! - players out of a preseason 20-13 defeat of the Atlanta Falcons on Friday night at Hard Rock Stadium.

Never mind - they're headed to the next Super Bowl!

(It's in New Orleans).

OK, so that would be a, uh, overreaction.

Let's try out an Overreaction Monday, huh?

And you let us know if you think these are or are not overreactions.

Remember, last Friday we didn't see Tua Tagovailoa, Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle or Jalen Ramsey.

Let's discuss what we did see..

Jaylen Wright is going to be a star in 2024

Overreaction? Well, yeah. Too soon. I mean, we certainly liked what we saw from the rookie running back on Friday night. He looks fast. He looks elusive. But we don't know what he doesn't know. He may not know what he doesn't know. He's a rookie. Is there outstanding potential? Well, yeah. But the Dolphins are likely to heavily utilize three running backs this season. And it's entirely possible Raheem Mostert and De'Von Achane have more touches in 2024.

Patrick Paul is ready to play in 2024 if needed

Overreaction? Well, yeah. Again, what se saw from the rookie left tackle was encouraging. He is massive. He did not seem overwhelmed. He has good mobility for a large man. We just have to keep some perspective here. The Falcons top two defensive linemen did not play. And their top outside linebackers played a total of 32 snaps. And the Falcons probably weren't as exotic as they would be in-season. The reality is if something were to happen to Terron Armstead, we would probably see Kendall Lamm up next at left tackle. But, yes, the upside for Paul is evident.

Miami's backup quarterbacks are a major concern

Overreaction? Well, yeah. A little. But this one is worth monitoring. We're not going to bother mention Ryan Tannehill is unsigned. They wouldn't really... nah, can't imagine. Look, neither Mike White nor Skylar Thompson was great on Friday and they kind of haven't been great throughout camp. But, a couple things here. 1) If Tua Tagovailoa goes down for any length of time, Miami is in trouble almost no matter what. 2) White and Thompson were playing without Miami's best offensive players and, overall, 20 of their offensive teammates. Twenty. Thompson may be more athletic and may have a stronger arm than White. But White has proven to be a calm, reliable NFL backup.

BONUS: Jason Sanders is solid from 50+ now

Overreaction? Well, maybe not. In 2021 and 2022, Sanders was only 4 of 12 from 50-plus yards. But last season, Sanders was 5 of 7 from long range. Last year, he made a 57-yarder. On Friday night he booted a 58-yarder. What we think is that Sanders is a good kicker. And that coach Mike McDaniel has reason to have gained confidence in Sanders' ability to connect from 50+, even as far as 58 yards away.
