6 Saints who could be on the trade block at roster cuts
The book has been shut on the NFL preseason, and now every team is working to process roster cuts before the NFL deadline on Tuesday, Aug. 27. While almost 1,200 players will be let go in the days ahead, there will also be a flurry of trades as teams work to get around the waiver wire and add pieces they covet from other squads.
Could the New Orleans Saints enter the mix? While embattled talents like running back Kendre Miller and cornerback Marshon Lattimore are big-name attractions, there could be some preseason standouts who draw more serious attention from other teams. Here are six names we're watching closely this week:
Kendre Miller
Salary cap impact: $1,007,014 in savings
Miller hurt his hamstring early in the first day of training camp practice and has hardly been seen since, with head coach Dennis Allen voicing his disappointment that the second-year pro hasn't been available what's felt like a couple times a week. He wouldn't be doing that if there wasn't someone on the medical staff expressing confidence Miller could play. There sure seems to be a rift between the coach and one of the youngest players on the team. It's possible the Saints could decide to just cut their losses. Jordan Mims, James Robinson, and Jacob Kibodi have all made plays this preseason.
Marshon Lattimore
Salary cap impact: $3,968,000 in savings
The Saints didn't get an offer worth entertaining all summer and it feels unlikely they'd get one now. But never say never. The deadline to trade Lattimore and his option bonus is Sunday, Sept. 1, and deadlines spur action in the NFL. A desperate team like the DaRon Bland-less Dallas Cowboys could act boldly. It would have to take a prime draft pick to get Lattimore out of New Orleans but the team has shown they can develop quality cornerbacks to fill in for him. If Lattimore isn't traded this week it isn't happening until next year, if ever at all.
Isaiah Foskey
Salary cap impact: $1,147,033 in savings
It's tough to find another defensive end who has logged more pass-rush snaps this preseason with less to show for it than Foskey. He's taken almost one hundred of those reps through three exhibition games without bagging a single sack. Maybe he just isn't connecting with what the coaching staff is trying to teach him. The Saints won't cut last year's 40th overall draft pick outright but they could probably be persuaded into dealing him to another team.
Payton Turner
Salary cap impact: $2,367,918 in savings
Turner is in a similar boat to Foskey as another high draft pick (No. 28 overall a couple years ago) who hasn't met expectations. But we've seen the flashes, disruption, and pressures from him. What complicates things are his injury history and contract status. Turner is still dealing with flare-ups from foot surgery a year ago. He's also going to be a free agent in 2025 after the Saints declined to pick up his fifth-year option. Maybe another team is willing to trust their pre-draft evaluation and roll the dice on him.
Anfernee Orji
Salary cap impact: $795,000 in savings
This wouldn't make many fans happy after Orji's strong summer, but linebacker is a position of great depth in New Orleans, and it's also a position that has seen several players traded around the league in recent days. Orji fits the same profile that teams are looking for as an athletic backup with starting-quality traits and experience in the kicking game. The Saints don't have enough roster spots for all the linebackers worth keeping and Orji could be their most intriguing trade asset out of the group.
Shemar Jean-Charles
Salary cap impact: $1,055,000 in savings
Jean-Charles is in the same position as Orji as someone who's done well enough to make the team as a backup. And corners like that are in high demand. If the Saints are debating whether to roster Jean-Charles or someone like Rico Payton, they could call up a cornerback-needy team and ask what it would cost to have that decision made for them. You don't want to give up quality depth but if the alternative is risking a good player leaving on on waivers for nothing, try and get a draft pick or other compensation instead.
