4 matchups that could define Alabama football vs Georgia in SEC opener

Alabama football will not have the chance to ease into SEC play Saturday night.

The No. 4 Crimson Tide will host No. 1 Georgia as its first conference opponent of the 2024 season in a game that could define both teams' paths to a potential SEC championship and a College Football Playoff berth.

Alabama kicks off against Georgia at 6:30 p.m. Saturday on ABC.

Here are the four matchups could define which team leaves Bryant-Denny Stadium with a victory Saturday night.

Georgia QB Carson Beck vs Alabama football 'swarm' defense

No matter the opponent, Alabama's "swarm" defensive identity remains the same each week under defensive coordinator Kane Wommack, with ball-hawk defensive backs and athletic outside linebackers doing everything in their power to force pressure and create takeaway opportunities.

The Crimson Tide will try and do so against quarterback Carson Beck and a Georgia offense that has not had a fumble or an interception in 2024, and that has a reputation of not making many mistakes.

The turnover margin will play a massive role in deciding Saturday's game, one Alabama will try everything to have the upper hand in.

One of the most high-profile transfer additions of the offseason in the SEC, Georgia running back Trevor Etienne has seen his share of touches, leading the team in plays (27) and yards from scrimmage (182) through the first three games. But the former Florida running back has not scored his first Bulldogs touchdown.

Without right guard Tate Ratledge, who is out with an ankle sprain, Alabama interior defensive linemen Tim Keenan and Tim Smith could have an opportunity on their hands to limit Etienne and the Georgia run game between the tackles to keep the Bulldogs offense behind schedule.

Etienne explodes each time he touches the ball, averaging 6.7 yards per touch. If the Crimson Tide can limit his success, Alabama's defensive game plan will be off and running.

Alabama OT Kadyn Proctor vs Georgia edge rushers

No matter if Mykel Williams suits up for Georgia or not, Alabama offensive tackle Kadyn Proctor will fast his toughest competition Saturday night against the Bulldogs.

According to Pro Football Focus, Proctor did not give up a sack, hit, hurry or pressure in his first 2024 action against Wisconsin. That level of pressure could change Saturday night against Williams or a player like Tyrion Ingram-Dawkins, who has five tackles-for-loss through three games.

Alabama football manhandled Wisconsin with Kadyn Proctor back. But is it ready for Georgia?

Proctor and the rest of the Alabama offensive line's ability to keep the pocket clean could be the difference between a high-octane performance for the Crimson Tide offense, and a long night for Jalen Milroe and company.

Milroe has face big moments before: the top-25 home meeting against Texas, the SEC Championship against Georgia, the College Football Playoff semifinal at the Rose Bowl against Michigan. The results have been a mixed bag, usually plagued and overcome by pressure from opposing defensive fronts.

But Milroe has been on a different level in 2024. In his second season, as Alabama's starting quarterback, he's led one of the most efficient and explosive offenses in the country, one that averages a touchdown every nine plays.

Mantras that remain Jalen Milroe's foundation before Alabama football vs Georgia

Saturday could be Milroe's official introduction as a 2024 Heisman Trophy contender with all eyes on Tuscaloosa and its top-four matchup. With more big matchups ahead, including a road meeting against Tennessee, Milroe's performance against the Bulldogs could be a springboard for defining the ceiling of his 2024 season.
