How much has Kane Wommack, Alabama football defense shown in 2024 season?

Alabama football defensive coordinator Kane Wommack has his share of off-week goals for the Crimson Tide defense.

He wants to see fundamental improvement, especially from the younger players ahead of their first foray into SEC play. He wants to see consistent schematics especially in blitz patterns and techniques up front.

Wommack said it's a good thing Alabama's defense has room to grow heading into SEC play, admitting the Crimson Tide has not shown all their cards as a unit.

"Fortunately for us, we have probably shown a small volume of defense over the first three weeks here," Wommack said. "And that's a good thing."

In Alabama's first three wins against Western Kentucky, South Florida and Wisconsin, Wommack said the Crimson Tide "carried a lot more defense going into each of those three games."

"Once we realized we didn't have to show certain things, we chose not to do that," Wommack said.

Through three games, Alabama has the No. 19 total defense in the country, allowing 248 yards per game and 3.37 yards per play.

Alabama is tied for 14th with Illinois and Miami in scoring defense, having allowed 26 points in three games: two touchdowns and four field goals.

The Crimson Tide is one of 19 teams in FBS to have allowed two touchdowns or less heading into Week 4 along with SEC teams Ole Miss (zero), Georgia (zero), Tennessee (one) and Texas (two).

Wommack said Alabama will open up its playbook as SEC play nears.

"We'll get a ton of great reps in some of those things schematically that we need to make sure we get extra reps in as we move into SEC play," Wommack said.

Alabama will have an off week next weekend before opening SEC play against Georgia at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 28 at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
