Why Kane Wommack calls QB Carson Beck 'as good as it comes' before Alabama football vs Georgia
Alabama football defensive coordinator Kane Wommack joined the Crimson Tide for games like the one coming Saturday against Georgia.
For Wommack, it's an opportunity to "compete against the best and to create value" for himself as an individual, but also for individual players and for the team as a whole. And as Alabama prepares to "compete against the best," the first player that comes to Wommack's mind is Georgia quarterback Carson Beck.
"I think their quarterback Carson Beck is as good as it comes in college football right now," Wommack said.
Through three games against Clemson, Tennessee Tech and Kentucky, Beck has 680 passing yards, seven touchdowns and zero interceptions. He has completed 68.3% of his 82 pass attempts, and has led an offense with one turnover: a turnover-on-downs to end the first half against Tennessee Tech.
In 2023, his first season as Georgia's starting quarterback, Beck led the SEC in pass attempts (417), completions (302) and passing yards (2,941). He had 28 total touchdowns and six interceptions
"Incredibly efficient with his decision making, does not take many sacks, rarely turns the ball over. takes care of the football," Wommack said. "And I think he does a really tremendous job in his intermediate throwing game and has great accuracy in those things. Really great release, great decision maker. Just so impressed by him the more I watch, and I've probably watched every game in the last couple games here."
In Georgia's 27-24 SEC Championship loss to Alabama Dec. 2, Beck completed 21 of 29 pass attempts for 243 passing yards. He had a rushing touchdown and was sacked twice.
Through Georgia's first three wins, its offense has averaged 6.9 yards per play. The Bulldogs have the No. 67 total offense and the No. 59 scoring offense in the country.

But neither of these numbers seemingly mean much to Wommack, who said Georgia does a "really good job at minimizing risk for the quarterback." Wommack said Alabama's defense will have to find a "balance of playing good, sound coverage and also not making the quarterback feel like he can just sit int he pocket and pick you apart."
And for Wommack, that goes back to how impressive Beck has been leading the Georgia offense.
"This guy's a complete quarterback," Wommack said. "I mean, he's as good as I've seen the last couple of years here."
