3 important reasons Peoria High football won this rivalry shootout with Notre Dame

PEORIA — Breon Green and Detaurion Pollard got next.

The Peoria High quarterback and running back junior duo shined in Week 2’s biggest moments, helping lead the Lions to a 46-40 win over city and Big 12 Conference rival Peoria Notre Dame on Friday at Richwoods Stadium.

Green (290 passing) and Pollard (127 rushing) accounted for 417 of Peoria High’s 543 total yards, while having a hand in all seven touchdowns.

“And I think that’s what ... will make us real dangerous," Peoria High coach Aaron Montgomery said, “is that balance we’ve been able to develop and continue to polish going forward.”

Peoria High's newest QB1

Green, a 5-foot-10, 165-pounder, looked extra sharp in only his second start this season. He finished 12-for-20 with three touchdown passes and added 27 yards on the ground.

His favorite receiver, TQ Webb, caught four passes for 125 yards including scores of 47 and 52 yards, respectively.

“Practice, practice, practice,” Webb said of what it takes to build chemistry with Green. “We’ve been working those (routes) in practice every day.”

However, Green points to his big guys upfront — Kamarr Montford, Kemarri Jackson, Dashawn Brock, Jaquarius Green and Christian Alexander — blocking for him as well his sure-handed wideouts Webb, Jaylen Rayford and Spencer Russell.

“Lineman was on the point. Receivers on point,” Green said. “I just do my job, and we all stayed together to get the ‘W’. Very blessed (to have such talented receivers). They’re very unique. All good in their own way. All have their own certain talents and we’re like family.”

After sitting behind prolific three-year starter Tino Gist, Green says he learned fundamentals, footwork and technique from his predecessor. Montgomery has been singing his QB1’s praises since the preseason.

“He’s a dynamic kid,” the first-year coach said. “He made great decisions tonight. … He loves the game of the football. Everybody’s getting their sneak peak at Mr. Green.”

Peoria High's newest top runner

But Green isn’t the only Peoria High player having his coming out party. Pollard, a 5-foot-10, 175-pounder, was the Peoria High workhorse, rushing 29 times and adding scores of 2, 8, 2 and 1 yards. His final TD with 4:32 left in the game proved to be the game winner.

“Every time we got in the huddle," Pollard said, “… they were telling me, ‘Keep going no matter what.’ … They helped me.”

Summer workouts with former Peoria High all-state running back Malachi Washington helped improve Pollard’s mindset.

“You have to give 100 percent every play,” he said of Washington’s advice. “Just give it your all.”

Peoria High's big-play defense

It was the defense that saved the day for Peoria High, which moved to 2-0 overall and undefeated through two games in Big 12 Conference action. A Jaquarius Green fumble recovery late in the third quarter halted a PND drive.

Gerald Jenkins then sealed the game with a late-game interception after Peoria High turned it over on downs deep in its own territory.

“I couldn’t be more proud,” Montgomery said. “They had their backs against the wall three or four times there. We came out with a couple of turnovers, a big stop.”

High-scoring affairs are nothing new in the modern Peoria High-PND series. These teams have combined to score at least 75 points nine times since 2014, including more than 100 three times highlighted by the record-setting 82-80 game in 2016. Those 162 points still are a state record for combined points in a single IHSA game when both teams score.

The Lions have won the last 10 meetings — last season’s victory was forfeited due to an ineligible player — but that doesn’t mean PND didn’t keep things interesting at Richwoods Stadium on a clear yet breezy night.

Irish running back Lawson Alwan was a one-man wrecking crew in the first half, rushing for 147 yards and all three of his TDs including 62 and 54 scores in the second quarter. The 5-foot-11, 190-pound senior running back was held to just six yards on four second-half carries, finishing with 153 yards on 13 rushes.

“That offense gives everybody nightmares,” Montgomery said of the PND’s Wing-T “We made some adjustments.”

Jack Hanley added 15 carries for 63 yards and two scores for PND, which finished with 376 rushing yards. Rayford had a pair of catches for 70 yards highlighted by a 57-yard touchdown, while Russell grabbed 79 yards on five receptions.

So, what’s the message for teams underestimating the new look Peoria High backfield?

“They definitely got to be looking out for us,” Pollard said. “We some dogs.”
