In this installment of Practical Magic, Lisa Stardust explores how witches are hexing the presidential election. Always remember that magic is for believers, but this column can also simply serve as a guide to getting in touch with yourself — magically or not.

Witches have a long history with politics, so it's no surprise that they're hexing the 2024 presidential election.

Known as “resistance witches,” they stand together against the patriarchy, working toward civic causes that can improve the world. Since witches are closely connected with the rhythms of the universe and earth, they want to bring peace and harmony to the planet. They aim to help people strive towards greatness — particularly the disenfranchised and those subject to prejudice. Therefore, they take down those who abuse their authority.

Hexing for political advocacy and gain is nothing new. Witches in Britain aligned with each other to protect their country against the Nazis, hexing Adolf Hitler in the 1940s. And, W.I.T.C.H. (Women's International Terrorist Conspiracy from Hell) stood for women’s and LGBTQIA rights, casting spells and performing rituals to advance their cause.

So, on the eve of the 2024 election, here's how you can supercharge your vote with magic. But that's the most important part — you actually have to vote. If you're of age to hit the polls, the strongest spell you can cast is at the ballot box.

Use The Moon To Enrich Your Vote:

The moon is one of the most essential natural elements a witch and astrologer can use. It can dictate the outcome of an event. On election day, the moon will be in Sagittarius's lucky and fortunate sign until 3:18 PM ET. If you’re voting in real life, it’s advisable to vote when the moon is in Sagittarius. That way, you’ll maximize the potency and energy of the candidate you favor.

Ritual For The Election:

Tarot reader and magical practitioner Fernando Salinas says “it is important for us to create [favorable] conditions for the candidate who will cause the most good to win, and so I’ve devised a candle dressing to help light the fire for social justice, healing, and peace; I think we all know which candidate would allow for those things to flourish.”

Here are the directions, according to Salinas:

Infuse an orange candle with your intention by holding it to your heart and allowing it to feel the need in your spirit for the candidate to win who will bring people together, allow for hope to spring forth again, and who will help heal division and bring peace. Then take blessed water and wipe it over the candle, washing it clean of any negative energy and allowing your intention to fully immerse itself into the ritual.

Next, place pyrite in the wax away from the wick, and follow that by sprinkling a few rose petals and oak leaves away from the wick as well. Remember, you’ll be lighting this candle, so don’t put too many combustibles — we want to ignite the flame of victory, not burn down anyone’s house!

Finally, you’ll dip your finger in some olive oil, rubbing the top lip of the candle to seal in your intention and to help ensure that peace reigns supreme. Hold the candle to your heart again, and allow your spirit to speak to the candle and fill it with your supplication.

Light the candle, making sure to follow candle and fire safety precautions. As you stare at the flame, feel the warmth and the light wash over you, and imagine how wonderful it will be to live in a world where we are healed, peaceful, and connected.

Bind The Least Favorable Candidate:

To prevent the candidate you don't like from winning, print out a photo of them, write their name and birthdate on the back of the picture, fold the paper, and wrap it up in twine. State your objective and intention. I would recommend explaining why you don't want a particular candidate not to win. Put the photo in a box in the back of your closet. Keep it there until the election ends, and a winner has been announced. When you discard it, throw out a few blocks from your home to ensure the energy doesn't follow you. Then, cleanse the closet, home, and yourself with a sage smudge stick.

For A Peaceful Win:

Tarot reader and psychic medium Sarah Potter suggests the following spell to create a well-received win and to charge up your vote with energy. For this spell, you will need a yellow talisman (for positivity and clear communication) and the Wheel of Fortune card from your favorite Tarot deck.

Put on a playlist of upbeat songs that you love. Write the name of your chosen candidate into the object. Put it on top of the Wheel of Fortune. As you hold the talisman, recite this incantation out loud three times “By the energy of the north, south, east, and west, my vote is cast for change to manifest!” Bring the talisman with you when you go to vote.

Sometimes change is fast, and sometimes it takes time to see it unfold. Don’t lose faith in your ability to invoke change through your vote. Even after the election, continue to look for opportunities to enact changes in order to create the world you wish to live in.
