Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid has announced his intentions to sign a long-term extension. Well, sort of.

McDavid proposed to his longtime girlfriend Lauren Kyle this past Thursday, with the happy couple revealing their engagement in a celebratory post via Instagram on Saturday.

“(June 22, 2023) was the best day of my life,” Kyle wrote. “I cannot put into words how happy I am to be spending the rest of our lives together. Almost eight years of growth, happiness and so much love and I can’t believe we have so much more to look forward to.

“I knew you were my person from the day we met and I can’t wait for the beautiful life we are going to create together. Thank you for the most thoughtful, picture perfect proposal that I could never have imagined. I love you more than anything.”

The two have been dating for almost eight years and currently share a house and a dog in Edmonton. They have also been vacationing south of the border this offseason, as per their social media accounts, attending a luxurious resort in Canyon Point, Utah.

McDavid's Oilers were eliminated in the second round of the playoffs by the eventual Stanley Cup-winning Vegas Golden Knights last month. His engagement is sure to take some of the sting out of that tough defeat.

The superstar will likely take home plenty of hardware during Monday’s NHL Awards show in Nashville. The 26-year-old has already secured his fifth Art Ross and first Rocket Richard Trophy with a league-leading 64 goals and 153 points in 2022-23 and is the heavy favourite for the Hart Trophy and Ted Lindsay Award.

We'll see what Edmonton general manager Ken Holland gives McDavid as an engagement gift as the NHL's free-agent signing period opens on July 1.
