Volvo Changes Its Mind, EX30 EV Deliveries Set for This Year
Volvo announced that initial deliveries of EX30 will now happen before the end of 2024.
The EX30 will first arrive in Twin Motor Performance guise, starting at $46,195.
Volvo will build this initial batch of EX30s in China, though later the brand will ship the model in from Ghent, Belgium once production gets underway.
Volvo is reversing course on its EX30 subcompact electric SUV. The EX30 was originally due to arrive in the United States this past summer, but in June the Swedish automaker announced plans to push the American launch of the EX30 to 2025. Now, Volvo intends to kick off initial deliveries of the EX30 for American customers before the end of this year.
Volvo will begin fulfilling preorders for U.S. customers and will prioritize the most popular variant of the model so far, the EX30 Twin Motor Performance. The company is asking preorder holders to start configuring their cars now.
The EX30 Twin Motor Performance starts at $46,195 and packs an electric motor on each axle, producing 422 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque. That's enough gusto to launch the Volvo to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds. With a 64.0-kWh battery pack on board, the all-wheel-drive EX30 Twin Motor Performance nets an EPA-estimated range of 253 miles.
The EX30 Single Motor will arrive in 2025 with a starting price of $36,245, per Volvo. This version of the EX30 features a single electric motor hooked at the rear axle that churns out 268 hp and 253 pound-feet of torque. Getting to 60 mph takes a claimed 5.1 seconds, while driving range sits at an EPA-estimated 261 miles for models with 19-inch wheels and 257 miles for those with 18-inchers.
Volvo first announced plans to delay the EX30 over the summer, with the automaker blaming "changes in the global automotive landscape," an apparent reference to the 100-percent tariff recently imposed by the U.S. government on Chinese-built EVs. Initial production of U.S.-bound 2025 EX30s will take place in Zhangjiakou, China, before shifting entirely to the company's factory in Ghent, Belgium.
