Yahoo Autos Europe's VW Tayron Previews the Upcoming U.S. Tiguan Three-Row SUV
Volkswagen revealed the Tayron for the European market today, which replaces the Tiguan Allspace in that market.
We think the Tayron gives a solid outline of what to expect from the next-generation Tiguan for the U.S.
The Tayron sports handsome, rectangular styling and a luxurious-looking cabin.
Although Europe got a new Volkswagen Tiguan compact SUV last year, the U.S. is still waiting for its own next-generation Tiguan. Now, Volkswagen is launching yet another new crossover for Europe called the Tayron, and we think that this one gives a better preview of the 2025 Tiguan we'll soon get on our shores.
See, the Tayron replaces the Tiguan Allspace, the long-wheelbase version of VW's compact SUV that has been sold in the U.S. since 2018 as, simply, the Tiguan. Volkswagen says that it will reveal a new version of the Tiguan for the U.S. later this year that will receive a version of the same long-wheelbase platform as the Tayron. But the company specifies that "the sheetmetal, powertrain options, and equipment set will differ markedly." Even still, we think that the U.S.-spec Tiguan will be closely related to the Tayron you see here, and we'll get a look at the new model when it makes its U.S. debut at the L.A. auto show this November.
A Handsome, Well-Equipped Crossover
With that out of the way, let's dive into the Tayron itself. The crossover measures roughly 189.0 inches long, around three inches longer than the current U.S.-market Tiguan and about 11 inches shy of the Atlas. Seating for five is standard, with an optional third row that increases capacity to seven passengers.
The styling is typical Volkswagen, with lots of straight lines and rectangular forms. The headlights are joined by a thin LED light bar that is bisected by an illuminated Volkswagen logo and sits above a wide-mouthed grille, itself bookended by vertical vents. A chiseled character line runs from the front wheel arch and over the rear door handle to the taillights, while chrome trim flows over the side windows and down the back of the D-pillar. The taillights feature a trendy full-width design.
The cabin follows Volkswagen's latest design cues as seen on the ID.Buzz, with a large, upright 12.6-inch touchscreen mounted on the dashboard. Open-pore wood trim stretches the width of the car, while an illuminated decorative piece in front of the passenger's seat spills onto the doors. Overall, the cabin has an airy ambiance.
Powertrains Galore
There will be a wide range of four-cylinder powertrains offered in Europe starting with a 148-hp mild-hybrid setup. Later, Volkswagen will introduce two plug-in-hybrid Tayrons, with either 201 or 268 hp, paired with a 19.7-kWh battery that VW says will achieve an electric range of over 62 miles. The battery will be capable of charging at 11 kW on an AC charger or 50 kW on a DC fast-charger. Based on VW's statement, we don't expect to see these hybrids offered in the U.S.
Volkswagen will also introduce two turbocharged gas engines and two TDI turbo-diesel engines, with the most potent TDI putting out 190 horsepower and coming with all-wheel drive as standard. All powertrain setups are linked to automatic dual-clutch gearboxes.
The Tayron comes with standard adaptive cruise control, lane-change and lane-keep assist, and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection. It also has a digital rearview mirror, will display road signs in the digital gauge cluster, and will be able to prevent the doors from being opened if it detects an object approaching the side of the vehicle.
Optional extras include a voice assistant with ChatGPT integration, a panoramic sunroof, and a 700-watt Harman Kardon sound system. Buyers will also be able to spec power-adjustable leather seats with massage and ventilation functions.
While Volkswagen says the Tayron doesn't directly preview the U.S.-market next-generation Tiguan, we think it gives a pretty good idea of what to expect from the upcoming compact crossover.
