  • This Dino 246 GTS is freshly restored and just waiting for its mid-mounted V-6 to be revved up.

  • As a GTS, it has a lift-off targa roof for soaking in that Italian V-6 soundtrack.

  • Or maybe you'd rather crank up "Old Time Rock and Roll," in honor of this car's former owner, Bob Seger.

Yeah we know, a Dino 246 is not technically a Ferrari. Those cars built between 1956 and 1975, both single-seat racers and road-going machines, were badged with the Dino brand, named after Enzo's late son. Having said that, they were built by Ferrari and the best of them have all the fizz and panache of a proper Maranello prancing stallion, so we'll just turn the page on that controversy.

This 1973 Dino 246 GTS up for sale on Bring a Trailer (which, like Car and Driver, is part of Hearst Autos) is one of the best of the Dino breed. And it has some previous celebrity ownership to make things even more interesting. Delivered new at the factory in Italy to a U.S. buyer, it made its way into the hands of Detroit favorite son, rocker Bob Seger. Seger seems to have been a fan of the kind of cars that just soothe the soul, and we'd definitely put a targa-top Dino in that camp.

Launched in 1967 with a 2.0-liter, 65-degree V-6 that revved to 8000 rpm, the original Dino 206 was a little jewel of a car. It had a 90-inch wheelbase, an independent suspension at all four corners, and stunning aluminum bodywork. Tipping the scales at under 2000 pounds, it was a featherweight that made the most of its six-cylinder power.

The 2.4-liter V-6 in this 1973 246 GTS is fitted with triple Weber carburetors as per factory spec, and was rated at 175 horsepower when new. These later cars were a little heavier, with steel bodies, but the removable targa top of the GTS provides ample compensation as that six screams past 7000 rpm. This is a tiny, lithe, backroad-gobbling mongoose of a car, and the fact that it's also jaw-droppingly gorgeous just adds to the appeal.

It certainly seems to have seduced one Detroit rocker with its charms. Bob Seger's car history is pretty interesting: Off the back of the best-selling Night Moves album of 1976, he bought himself a manual-transmission BMW 530i sedan and used it as his California car when recording the seminal hits like "Old Time Rock and Roll." When Seger sings, “They drove for miles and miles up those twisting turning roads, higher and higher and higher they climbed,” he was inspired by running the canyons in Bavaria's best.

Picking a Dino 246 GTS over, say, Joe Walsh's Maserati is the kind of move a true enthusiast would pull. Seger drove his Dino into the 1980s, where it later changed hands a couple of times and then disappeared into storage. It was restored between 2021 and 2023 in the UK, and looks to be in near-flawless condition. The only knock against it is that it was originally Verde Scuro when in Seger's ownership, one of seven painted in that dark green hue, which really shows off the Scaglietti-built bodywork. It now wears a more traditional Ferrari red.

Still, this makes a fine car for running against the wind. The auction ends on November 25.
