Australia Post is hiring 3,000 seasonal workers as it ramps up operations ahead of the busy holiday season. The postal service is looking for staff across the country, with the highest demand in New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland.

Australia Post said it was focusing on workers with particular skill sets this year. It put the call out for forklift operators, van and truck drivers, but said it was also looking for people to work in parcel processing, deliveries and freight handling.

Adult pay rates start at $31.85 an hour for processing roles like mail officers and parcel sorters, and go up to $35.67 an hour for licensed roles like forklift, van and truck drivers. Some jobs can also attract additional casual loading for overtime, evening and weekend work.

Australia Post executive general manager of people and culture Sue Davies said seasonal casuals were critical to ensuring deliveries reached customers in time for the holidays.

“As we approach our busiest time of year, we’re looking to bolster our workforce to ensure we can meet increased demand and maintain the high level of service Australians expect from Australia Post,” Davies said.

“Last year, we delivered almost 100 million parcels in the lead up to Christmas, thanks to the help of our seasonal casuals who worked alongside our existing team members.”

Workers would need licenses for forklift, truck and motorbike work, but no extra experience is needed for the processing roles.

Davies noted a seasonal casual role could also lead to job opportunities beyond the end of the year. Jobseekers can apply through the Australia Post website.

Fellow delivery giant Amazon is also gearing up to hire seasonal workers and told Yahoo Finance more information would be available in the coming weeks.

Experts expect the job market to remain tough for those seeking work in the coming months.

The unemployment rate lifted slightly to 4.1 per cent in June. The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has forecasted it to rise to 4.4 per cent by the middle of next year, while Westpac economists say it will reach 4.5 per cent.

SEEK said job ads had plunged 20 per cent in the 2024 financial year. The drop in available jobs has seen a rise in competition for jobs, with the platform reporting about 175 applications per ad posted on its website compared to 50 applications per ad reported the previous year.

SEEK CEO Ian Narev said the bleak outlook was likely to continue for the rest of the financial year.

“For FY2025, economists are forecasting weaker macroeconomic conditions in most of our markets,” he said.

“Based on our historical experience of similar conditions, we have assumed that paid ad volumes in ANZ (Australia and New Zealand) will continue to decline throughout financial year 2025.”
