Money for millions of Aussies cashing in on August cost-of-living relief: 'From $300 to $1,672'

From energy rebates to cost-of-living concessions, here's a roundup of all the support coming for Aussies in August.

Cost-of-living pressures are hitting Aussies across the country and many of us are looking for ways to save cash where we can. There's a range of government cost-of-living rebates and relief available this month, depending on where you live.

That includes $300 energy bill rebates rolling out to millions of Aussies this month, rebates for eligible or low-income households, and reduced public transport costs for Aussies.

Yahoo Finance has compiled a breakdown of all the major payments and relief kicking in for Aussies in August, along with where you can find more information on other available support.

There's one state that far outstrips the rest of the country, with Queenslanders cashing in on part of a "record" $11 billion cost-of-living relief package.

Here's all the details.

The federal government's $300 energy bill rebate will begin applying to New South Wales, Victoria and South Australian customer accounts in their next billing cycle.

Queensland residents will have already seen their rebates start to apply, on top of the state $1,000 electricity rebate applied from July.

South Australia notably has a cost-of-living concession for eligible residents being paid from August:

Western Australia is paying a cost-of-living rebate to eligible seniors in the state this month:

  • Cost Of Living Rebate: Annual rebate paid to eligible WA Seniors Card Members. Payments are $107.12 for singles and $160.68 for couples.

Premier Steven Miles told Yahoo Finance the Queensland government was taking "real-action".

"Pressures on the family budget are being felt right across the country. And talking to Queenslanders, cost-of-living relief is what matters to them most," he said.

"It's why my government has delivered record relief for Queenslanders through an $11 billion package of savings and concessions this financial year."

Here's what Queenslanders can cash in on this month:

  • 50 cent public transport: Reduced public transport across Translink services for the next six months, along with half-price Airtrain tickets.

  • 20 per cent off rego: Fees reduced for 12 months from September with reduced amounts to appear on rego notices this month.

  • $200 FairPlay vouchers: Sport and recreation activity vouchers for Queensland families that can be redeemed by June 2025.

  • $1,300 electricity bill rebate: $1,000 upfront state rebate, plus $300 federal rebate. Eligible seniors, pensioners and concession card holders can get $1,672 off their power bills.

New South Wales has various cost-of-living initiatives for residents but none specifically for August.

"The NSW Government is providing around $8.7 billion in support to households this financial year to assist with growing cost of living pressures," a Department of Customer Service spokesperson told Yahoo Finance.

Some measures include:

  • $60 toll cap: Motorists who spend more than $60 a week on tolls can claim a rebate of up to $340. Claims are currently open for spending from January to June 30 this year.

  • $50 Active and Creative Kids voucher: The voucher is available twice a year to use towards sport, creative and cultural activities, with the two vouchers now open for applications.

  • Up to $4,220 in early childhood fee relief: Up to $500 per year for 3-year-olds attending eligible preschool programs, up to $2,110 per year for kids aged 4-year-old and boave attending eligible preschool programs in long day care, and up to $4,220 for 3 to 5-year-olds attending eligible community and mobile preschools.

  • Up to $350 energy rebates: Family Energy Rebate and Seniros Energy Reabtes have increased to $250, and Low-Income Household Rebate to $350 for eligible households.

  • $250 pre-IVF fertility testing rebate: Rebate for out-of-pocket costs for eligible tests.

Victoria doesn’t have any specific cost-of-living support coming in for residents this month, but there are some upcoming savings including:

Tasmania also doesn’t have new support available but there are some upcoming savings:

  • $250 Energy Bill Relief rebate: Part of the government’s $500 energy bill rebate announced last year. Eligible households including pensioners, seniors and certain Centrelink recipients will get the rebate applied to their bills from September.

The ACT is paying a cost-of-living payment for apprentices and tradies in July and August:

  • $250 Cost Of Living Payment: One-off payment for ACT apprentices and trainees who live in the state and are employed by an ACT employer.
