As many as 270,000 Queensland households are missing out on up to $1,072 in electricity rebates.

The $1,072 is currently available to eligible seniors, veterans and concession card holders in the state and is made up of a $700 cost-of-living rebate on electricity bills, plus an existing $372 electricity rebate.

It was announced as part of last month’s state budget, along with a $550 electricity rebate for all Queensland households.

The government is urging all Queenslanders to check with their friends and family to see if they can claim the relief, with an estimated 13 per cent of eligible households currently missing out.

“If your mum, dad, grandparent, neighbour or friend could be eligible, check in to see if they are aware of what they could be claiming,” Minister for Energy, Renewables and Hydrogen Mick de Brenni said.

“It’s as simple as calling your energy provider and registering your seniors, veterans or concessions card to your account.”

As many as 270,000 eligible households could be missing out on the payment, including 70,000 in the Brisbane area, 34,000 on the Gold Coast and 24,000 in the Moreton Bay region.

Who is eligible for the rebates?

The rebates are available to people who have any of the following:

  • Queensland Seniors Card

  • Services Australia or Department of Veterans' Affairs Pensioner Concession Card

  • Services Australia Health Care Card

  • Department of Veterans' Affairs Gold Card (and receive the War Widow/er Pension or special rate TPI Pension)

  • Asylum seeker status

If you already receive the existing $372 Queensland Electricity Rebate, you will automatically receive the additional $700 cost-of-living rebate - $1,072 in total.

How to claim the rebate

Eligible households can contact their electricity provider to apply for the rebate. You will need to provide certain details, so you’ll need to have copies of your bills and concession card handy.

The rebates will be automatically deducted from your bill. The additional $700 rebate will appear as a $175 bill credit on your bill each quarter.

All other Queensland households will automatically receive the $550 cost-of-living rebate. It will appear as a $137.50 credit on your bill each quarter.
