Paddington In Peru, the third film in the adored-by-everyone franchise, is coming to cinemas on Friday 8 November.

But, if you’ve seen the trailer already, you might have noticed something different about the upcoming film. Mary Brown, played by Sally Hawkins in the first two films, has been recast, with a new actress for this latest instalment.

Emily Mortimer is now playing Mrs Brown, which has caused some controversy among fans of the previous films. But Sally has assured audiences that there was no drama surrounding the recasting.

“For me, it’s felt the right time to hand the reins over to another, and one can’t get much better than the truly wonderful Emily Mortimer; she is extraordinarily special,” Sally said. “I am, and will always be, in love with Paddington’s world. I already greatly miss my on- and off-screen family.

“The experience of making the first two films has truly been some of the best and most creative times I’ve had in the world of film. They both gave me so much joy. I will forever hold them so very close to my heart indeed.”

Hugh Bonneville, who plays Mr Brown, commented on the recasting, saying, “We’re not pretending it’s anything other than a straight swap. There hasn’t been a hideous divorce or anything. Emily just seemed like a perfect fit.”

The film’s director, Dougal Wilson (another change, as Paul King directed the first two films), added: “We were lucky to get Emily. She’s radiant and warm and so clever; she’s a writer herself so she’s wonderful at ad-libbing. It’s a tough role; she’s the emotional core of the Browns and the most emotionally connected with Paddington.”

Other new cast members include Olivia Colman as the Reverend Mother, and Antonio Banderas as Hunter Cabot. They join returning cast members Ben Whishaw as Paddington, Julie Walters as Mrs Bird and Imelda Staunton as Aunt Lucy.
