Anna Maxwell Martin and David Mitchell's BBC murder mystery Ludwig has had its future confirmed.

The series, which follows the Peep Show star's titular puzzler-setter-turned-reluctant-murder-detective, has just wrapped up its debut run on BBC One.

Fans will now be delighted to hear that the broadcaster has recommissioned the show for a second season, with Mitchell and Martin both set to return as John 'Ludwig' Taylor and Lucy Betts-Taylor.

"I’m delighted that John 'Ludwig' Taylor has failed to escape the clutches of the Cambridge police and will have to continue to face up to the city’s alarming conundrum-based crime wave," Mitchell said of the renewal.

Creator Mark Brotherhood added: "We’ve all been blown away by the reaction to Ludwig and I’m thrilled we get to come back with a whole new set of puzzles for him to solve in his unique way."

Ludwig has turned into a big hit since its debut last month, becoming the BBC's biggest scripted show since 2022 and the largest launch for a comedy in six years after drawing in 9.5 million viewers over 28 days.

Earlier this month, Mitchell expressed hope that the show would continue, telling a Q&A: "That's certainly our hope, that it'll carry on. Fingers crossed."

The actor also revealed why he was drawn to the series, explaining that he is a fan of cosy murder mysteries.

"Some of my happiest viewing memories are as a child watching Miss Marple with Joan Hickson – I mean, she was in it, she wasn't in the room," he said.

"I think when it can have a comic spin as well, that's even better, because I like a murder mystery puzzle, a whodunnit, but I don't love watching things that are horrific and gritty and sort of remind you of the frailty of human life."

Ludwig is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
