Victoria Beckham on wearing mini skirts at 48: 'I never want to play it safe'
Victoria Beckham has had her fair share of iconic fashion moments over the years. From one fifth of the famed Spice Girls, to England WAG, to fashion designer, her style trajectory has been a rollercoaster to say the least, and part of her growing style confidence is down to “challenging” herself with what she wears.
“I never want to play it completely safe,” the designer told The Telegraph in an interview about her latest fashion collection, out in November.
Whilst ‘designer’ Beckham has distanced herself somewhat from the ‘WAG’ Beckham of the early Noughties, she’s more and more unflinching about referencing her past in recent years, even releasing a Victoria Beckham Beauty lipstick shade in honour of her Spice Girls moniker ‘Posh’ in 2021.
The designer – whose collections of loose-fitting tailored suits and comfortable, yet form-fitting knitted dresses have earned her a permanent status on the fashion week roster – has even surprised herself with some of her more 'out-there' choices for the latest collection.

“If you’d told me I’d have desired bright shiny jersey six months ago I’d have thought you’d gone crazy,” she says. “But here we are. I really like challenging myself with what I wear.”
“They’re my version of those black skinny trousers Olivia Newton John wore in Grease, she added, “I always wanted to wear that look”.

Elsewhere, Beckham clearly has had away with any so-called style ‘rules’ for ageing; long gone are the days where you should have to cover up at a certain age.
One piece in particular that she is determined to bring back from her past? The mini skirt.
“I’ve lived in denim the past two years and that’s still a go-to, mixing them with men’s shirting or scarf neck tie blouses which feels smart but relaxed,” she told The Telegraph. “But now I’m ready to strut my stuff. I’m dying to wear minis, but how do I do that in a way that feels fresh and relevant?”

Relevance comes in the form of knee-high boots and tights for the winter collection, when the weather’s cooler, which Beckham says was inspired by American Gigolo, the 1980 film starring Richard Gere and Lauren Hutton.
“It’s not that I drew on it literally,” she says, “but I loved the idea of Lauren Hutton owning her s**t. That’s a strong fashion message”.
