Teenager with two wombs wakes from coma to learn she was pregnant and gave birth

A teenager woke up from a four-day coma to find that she had given birth to a baby despite not knowing that she was pregnant.

Ebony Stevenson, 18, went to bed on December 2, 2018 after suffering from a headache.

Little did she know, the college student was rushed to hospital and placed in an induced coma before waking up three days later having given birth to a baby girl.

Stevenson was unaware that she was pregnant having not developed a bump, missed a period or developed morning sickness.

But the teenager later discovered that she has a rare condition known as Uterus Didelphys – which affects one in 3,000 women – which means her unborn baby was hidden in one of two uteruses.

While one uterus continued to menstruate, the other carried her child.

When Stevenson was rushed to hospital after suffering a number of seizures, medics discovered that she had suffered from pre-eclampsia – a condition which affects one in every 4,000 pregnancies.

The medical team immediately contacted the teenager’s mother and explained that the baby needed to be delivered as soon as possible.

Unknowingly, the student underwent an emergency caesarean and gave birth to her first daughter who she later named Elodie.

“Waking up from a coma to be told I had been pregnant and had given birth to a baby girl was overwhelming to say the least,” the 18-year-old admitted.

“Meeting my baby was so surreal. It felt like an out of body experience. I worried I wouldn’t bond with my daughter because I had no time to get my head around her arrival, but I think she’s amazing.”

Stevenson’s mother, Sheree, was the first to hold her surprise grandchild.

“It was a strange moment because I had no time to prepare for it,” she said. “I was over the moon that she was happy and healthy, but couldn’t help but worry about my own little girl who remained in a coma.”

Elodie was born 7lbs 10oz (3.5kg) and doctors believe she was carried to full term without her mother realising due to one of Stevenson’s uteruses being closer to her back.

“Although I had no time to prepare, I wouldn’t change what’s happened for the world,” Stevenson added. “I’m so excited to wake up and see her every morning, and to get to spend another day with my precious little miracle.”
