When is Black Friday?
Black Friday always falls on the fourth weekend of November, which is the 29th in 2024, and the sales usually extend through the weekend into Cyber Monday, which falls on 2nd December. Last year, Sweaty Betty's sale ended at midnight on Cyber Monday.
It makes sense really, that the sale falls before Christmas: who wants to see their thoughtful presents slapped with a huge red sale tag just one day after they were gifted?
So, what exactly is Black Friday?
Originating in America, Black Friday refers to the annual post-Thanksgiving sales – which are chaotic, to say the least. The event was thought to be kick-started by department store Macy’s in the '30s, but the term 'Black Friday' wasn't officially coined until years later.
Fast forward to the big hair and lycra times of the '80s and the manic shopping period we know and – kind of – love today began to truly take shape.
Amazon was the first to give Black Friday a whirl in the UK, offering customers online discounts and deals on the same day as the sales in the US. Asda came next in 2013 with its in-store event, which included huge discounts on TVs and tech (there were physical fights, FYI).
Now, Black Friday has overtaken Boxing Day as the the biggest shopping event of the year, with most high street retailers taking part in some way.
