The “Sophisticated” Kitchen Design Trend You’re Going to See Everywhere in 2025
When I enter a new home, one of the first things that always catches my eye is beautiful lighting — the bright chandelier over the entryway, or the bold lamps by the console table. Statement lighting has been on the rise for some time now, but it’s become an even bigger movement for designers in 2024 (and 2025!). I spoke to a handful of interior designers about this growing trend, and they shared why it shows no signs of stopping anytime soon.
All About Statement Kitchen Lighting
So, why is statement lighting becoming such a trend? Designer Antonia Caicedo, creator of the Antonia Collection at JIMECO, says although it’s not exactly new, and “statement lighting has always been in vogue,” more people are simply catching on — in part because homeowners have more of a focus on lighting in the home, especially in the kitchen. “Lighting is such an important part of a home, as it sets the mood completely — even more than furniture.”
Bree Steele, an interior designer at RJ Living, a leading Australian interiors brand, agrees, saying it’s because lighting is essentially the focal point of any room, setting the mood of the space and doing it without too much fuss — or renovation.
“Statement lighting is getting more popular because people are realizing that it serves both functional and aesthetic purposes,” Steele says. “So with minimalism and modernism getting more popular, statement lighting provides an opportunity to add personality and flair without overwhelming the room.”
Sarah Speck, the director of product strategy and designer partnerships at Hudson Valley Lighting Group, shares the sentiment, noting that statement lighting is everywhere right now. “Statement lighting is having a moment — particularly with designers and homeowners that prefer a more sophisticated aesthetic. I think the reason for this is that statement lighting acts as the jewelry in the space, creating drama and interest, and eliciting a feeling.”
And when it comes to function, while recessed can lights will likely be in kitchens for decades to come, some designers want to see them take a back seat to lighting that’s more visually interesting. After all, pendant lighting is one of the most-desired home features for Americans right now.
“I’m so pleased to continue seeing excitement over decorative lighting in kitchens of all sizes,” says Noz Nozawa, principal designer and founder of Noz Design. “From small flush-mount lights in place of recessed can lights, to megawatt statement chandeliers and oversize pendants over kitchen islands, I just love kitchen lighting that you can see, versus only having discrete architectural lighting.”
Where to Get Statement Lighting for Your Kitchen
To add a shock of modernity, Steele recommends bold choices, like this gorgeous amber-colored floor lamp that features hand-blown orbs. “The amber hue of the light will make the space look comfortable and inviting, giving ambient light and a striking visual element,” she says. Caicedo’s favorite pieces are, of course, in her newest collection. “[It’]s quite special and unique, featuring goatskin inserts in various colors, an array of beautiful metal finishes, and stunning hand-cut crystals that you can truly customize to fit your style and decor.” One of her personal favorites?
