Revealed: 10 dog breeds that shed the most

The dog breeds that shed the most hair have been revealed, with double-coated Akitas topping the list.

Originating from mountainous regions in Japan, Akitas are known for their thick double coat that sheds naturally year-round. These large dogs go through a shedding phase called "blowing their coat," where they lose their winter layer in preparation for their summer one. When this happens, the fur will often come out in clumps over the course of 2-4 weeks.

Alaskan Malamutes took second position on the list, closely followed by American Eskimons and Bernese Mountain Dogs. These three breeds are more likely to shed due one key reason: their cloud-like fluffy coats.

Just like the Akitas, these breeds are also double-coated and shed to adjust to changing temperatures.

Other breeds on the list include Chow Chows, German Shepherds, Labrador Retrievers, and Pembroke Welsh Corgis.

The research, conducted by Shark, found that 28% of pet owners would always research the breed's moulting rate before buying or adopting.

On the other hand, the dogs that shed the least include Poodles, Yorkshire Terriers, Cockapoos, and Miniature Schnauzers. These breeds were found to have low shedding rates and hypoallergenic coats that are good for people with allergies, as they have less dander (a material that clings to pet hair and is the cause of most pet allergies).

It's also worth pointing out that shedding is a very normal process for dogs – in fact, there's no such thing as a non-shedding breed.

However, dog owners should be aware that excessive shedding can also be caused by parasites or health issues, like a bad diet or skin conditions.
