This Costco Fall Essential Is So Cute, I'm Going to Buy It Every October

Costco doesn’t immediately come to mind as the best place to buy seasonal pumpkins. Typically, I’m more of a farmers market or pumpkin patch girlie. But when I found myself grabbing groceries at my local club a few days ago, I couldn’t help but pick up a few Martha Stewart-approved heirloom pumpkins — something I had never seen at Costco before.

At just $5.99, these pumpkins were a steal — and in far better shape than I had expected them to be. OK, maybe they weren’t quite as pristine as the ones I found a day earlier at my local nursery, but they were also a quarter of the price.

If you’re looking to dress up your entry or fireplace with a bounty of pumpkins, then Costco is the place to go big, literally. Honestly, I was shocked by the pumpkins’ sizes — varied, yes, but all substantial — and how many different shapes, colors, and kinds they had in the assortment.

At my club, the pumpkins were piled in a big cardboard bin, similar to the way they merchandise decorative pillows. So be ready to dig for the style you want. And know that digging might create a bit of extra bruising on the pumpkins — but, hey, all you need is one good side to display!

I was lucky enough to find one of my favorites, the light peachy pink “porcelain” pumpkin variety, so I snagged that right away. I also grabbed a green round striped style. I put both on the stairs leading up to my home’s entry, and the way they play with my salmon mums and fuchsia celosia is quite pretty, if I do say so myself. These pumpkins would also be great around a fireplace or as a centerpiece for an autumnal dinner party.

My only regret? Not buying more of these pumpkins, which were even priced lower than the regular carving pumpkins! You can bet I’ll be popping into a store this week to snag more. Run — don’t walk — to Costco if you want to do the same, since there’s no guarantee they’ll restock this season.
