Why Prince William's first day of nursery school was one for the history books
Season six of The Crown is nearly here, and the final episodes are set to cover some of the British Royal Family’s biggest and most shocking moments from the late 1990s to the early 2000s.
Covering everything from Princess Diana’s death to Prince William meeting Catherine, Princess of Wales at St Andrews University, Netflix’s blockbuster series will cover some of history’s biggest talking points when it drops on 16 November.
Yet, following on from season five - which detailed the breakdown of Diana’s marriage to the now King Charles III - we can’t help but notice that one history-making detail was missed: Prince William’s first day of preschool.
In 1985, when William was just three years old, he became the first member of the Royal Family to attend nursery outside of the palace walls.
On his first day of preschool, the young prince arrived at Mrs. Mynors' Nursery School just after 9.30am in the morning to dozens of photographers and reporters waiting for his photocall with his mum and dad.
It has been reported that Diana had some influence on William attending school outside of the Buckingham Palace grounds. Before she married into the Firm, she was a nursery assistant at the Young England Kindergarten school in Pimlico - a school that taught using the Montessori method.
It seems the preference for Montessori teaching - a method that allows children to develop more hands-on skills - was favoured by William and he enlisted Prince George at Westacre Montessori School in Norfolk when the second-in-line to the throne was younger.
A decade after William’s toddler photocall, the now Prince of Wales also became the first senior family member to be sent to Eton College in Windsor, a stark difference from Gordonstoun, the Scottish school both King Charles and his father, the late Prince Philip attended.
It appears that Prince George may be about to follow in his father's footsteps once again after the family moved to Adelaide Cottage in the grounds of Windsor Castle last year and sent George, along with his younger siblings Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, to Lambrook School in Windsor.
It will likely be a few years before 10-year-old George begins studies at Eton however, as he will need to be 13 before he can go.
