There are few things that top tailgating, especially if done right. You just need good friends and good food (plus some sort of game to watch).

But what's the best of them all? With so many to choose from, I can understand the decision might be overwhelming. If you want a recipe that's easy, packs a flavorful punch, and is loved by our community, try our most-saved tailgate recipe of all time: slow cooker Texas pulled pork.

This recipe talks a big game. How can it not? It takes inspiration from Texas barbecue. It doesn't look like much at first, but boy does it delight every taste bud.

What Makes Texas Pulled Pork Different?

Texas style pulled pork is similar to other barbecue in the state and around the South. The meat is smoked low and slow for 6 to 12 hours, depending on the size and heat of the smoker. Obviously, you would need a smoker to make true Texas style pulled pork, but no matter what you use, the result is something juicy, tender, and unique. The outside is covered in a black, bark-like layer while the interior holds the rich, fatty flavor of the meat.

Every Texan might have their own way to serve it, with their own specific sides and sauces. Of course, the white bread is there, but the meat is already so juicy, you might not need it.

How to Make Texas Pulled Pork

If you don’t have a smoker, that’s no problem. Not everyone does. This recipe conveniently substitutes in the slow cooker. While this might not result in the same smokiness as true barbecue, the pork is still cooked low and slow as you would traditionally do. As a result, this recipe becomes quite simple and a go-to crowd-pleaser. For the best pulled pork, use pork shoulder with more marbling, which indicates a higher fat content.

  1. Place your roast in a slow cooker along with barbecue sauce, vinegar, and chicken broth. Stir in brown sugar, yellow mustard, Worcestershire sauce, chili powder, onion, garlic, and thyme.

  2. Then, cover and cook on high for about 5 to 6 hours or on low for about 10 to 12 hours.

  3. Remove the pork shoulder, shred with two forks, then combine with the sauce left over in the slow cooker.

Serve as desired, either on a buttered bun, an open face sandwich, or just with a fork and some coleslaw. The ways you want to eat this are up to you, and they will all be delicious.

  • “I didn’t have chicken stock on hand, so I substituted beer,” says reviewer Susan L Andersen. “I had everything else on hand. This was a huge hit with everyone and was super easy. The hardest part was chopping an onion.”

  • “This is amazingly good! The roast I had was 8 pounds and this recipe easily doubled in my large oval crock pot," says reviewer Judith Biggs. “We had lots of leftovers which we froze…and it was just as good after freezing!”
