Moonflower Murders' Atticus Pünd star Tim Mcmullan's very private life off screen
Tim McMullan, who stars as detective Atticus Pünd in the BBC’s new series Moonflower Murders, has had an impressive career across stage, film, and television. But while the actor is instantly recognisable in his role as the fictional sleuth in the BBC crime drama, a sequel series to the hit Magpie Murders, you might not be as familiar with his life away from the camera.
Known for his unique approach to acting, Tim’s off-screen life is dedicated to theatre and storytelling, and filled with prestige. Born in 1963 in Lambeth, London, Tim’s acting journey started early, where he studied at the University of St. Andrews before he pursued formal acting training at the world-famous Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (RADA).
Many of us may know him best as a TV star, but Tim’s love for theatre is undeniable. Over the years, he’s been involved in countless stage productions, from modern to classical roles, and alongside some of the biggest A-listers in the world.

In 2008, Tim starred alongside Homeland star Damian Lewis and Pirates of the Carribean’s Keira Knightley in The Misanthrope, a modern adaptation of a 17th century story, which earned him strong praise. Before that, Tim has also starred in stage adaptations of His Dark Materials in 2003 and As You Like It at Shakespeare’s Globe in 2009.
No stranger to a Shakespeare turn, in 2016, Tim also performed as Prospero in The Tempest at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, garnering glowing reviews and his acting deemed “excellent” by The Guardian, with the newspaper’s theatre critic adding that Tim was “long overdue for promotion to star roles.”
A key influence on Tim’s acting has been his work with theatre ensemble company, Complicité. His time with the company provided gave him some of his most memorable experiences, with Tim revealing to The Stage: “As an actor, you never experience anything else like Complicité.”
But, it’s Tim’s on-screen roles which have skyrocketed him to fame with a wider audience. You’ll recognise him from blockbuster series like The Crown and with Benedict Cumberbatch in Patrick Melrose.
The Moonflower Murders star is also a familiar face in films, with Tim having appeared in huge movies including Shakespeare in Love, The Fifth Element, and The Queen.
Tim also keeps his personal life private, remaining tight-lipped when it comes to family and personal relationships, rarely sharing information beyond his acting craft - instead, the TV star prefers to let his acting do the talking.

Moonflower Murders starts on Saturday ,16 November on BBC One, with a double-bill of episodes at 9:15pm and 10:20pm
