Images of the fashion designer Molly Goddard’s gloriously outlandish dresses, captured by the photographer Sarah Edwards, are now on show at Chelsea Space at Chelsea College of Arts.

Both interested in playing with light, texture and movement, the artists worked together to create ‘Dress Portrait’, a series of images of key pieces from Goddard’s past collections. Alongside photographs of the designer’s remarkable tulle dresses – which came into the limelight when Jodie Comer sported one in the BBC’s hit series Killing Eve last year – are Goddard’s previously unseen notebooks, research materials and studio equipment, offering insight into the designer’s thought-processes.

The multi-media approach to the exhibition, which gives visitors the chance to explore the creative process as much as the finished work itself, reflects Edwards' multi-disciplinary practice, drawing parallels between the various art-forms on show, whether photography, dress-making or illustrating.

Challenging the notion of wearability with clothes just as suitable for a festival as for the red carpet, Goddard established her eponymous label in London in 2014. In 2016 she won the prize for British Emerging Talent at the Fashion Awards, and in 2017 she was awarded the accolade for Breakthrough Designer at the Bazaar Women of the Year Awards. In a Bazaar interview with the fashion blogger Susie Lau, the designer described her relationship towards her growing success.

“I still feel a bit young and stupid sometimes and I find it all very overwhelming,” she said. “When you scour magazines and see your name next to someone you’ve admired for so long, it’s really strange.”

Dress Portraitgives space and time to Goddard's creations and proves that her designs exist to be celebrated, in all their extravagant glory.
